Case File 003 — the Getty kouros. A museum with world-class conservation science bought a marble youth for roughly $9M; lab results looked ancient, and the paperwork looked orderly.

The paperwork was the problem — fabricated documents in the acquisition file — and the ancient surface later proved reproducible artificially.

The label famously hedged: Greek, about 530 B.C., or modern forgery. Since the 2018 renovation it sits in storage.

Even elite institutions get burned when the record cannot carry the object.

Auction literacy is mostly reading order: provenance block, literature, exhibition history, condition — then, finally, the estimate.

The number means little until the record places the work in time and custody.

Train the reading order on public lot pages from any major house; it transfers directly to private buying, where records are thinner and the skill matters more.

Save this before you buy anything.

Case File 002 — Beltracchi. The most instructive fraud in the modern market was not a copyist: Wolfgang Beltracchi painted works that never existed and authored their histories — invented collections, plausible gaps, paper that answered questions before they were asked.

He admitted to roughly 300 forgeries spanning more than 50 artists across 35 years; conviction came in 2011, and it was materials analysis that broke the spell.

When provenance can be written retroactively by the seller, it is not provenance.

Case File 001 — Knoedler. A gallery founded in 1846 sold forged Abstract Expressionist works supplied through one dealer, attributed to a collection nobody could inspect. The US Department of Justice put it plainly when the supplier pleaded guilty: her victims paid more than $80 million for the fake works.

A $5.5M Rothko fell to forensic paint analysis — materials that were not commercially available in the claimed period. Ten lawsuits later the gallery was gone; the final suit settled in 2019.

The pattern to remember: every fake travelled on narrative — a story where a record should have been.

Five red flags that cost buyers real money: paperwork that is always somewhere else, prices that collapse under the mildest pressure, exhibition claims without a list, any push to move money outside recorded channels, and restoration that surfaces only under questioning.

None of them prove fraud. All of them mean: slow down and ask for the file.

A skipped question is cheap in the moment and expensive for years.
