As Pakistan turns 75 and the Karachi Biennale a youthful six, we look back with pride at the artists who inspired us and look ahead to the creativity yet to come. From the early prowess of A. R Chughtai to the exuberance of Ahmed Parvez and Gulgee, the larger-than-life works of Sadequain to the portraits of Bashir Mirza, the monumental sculptures of Shahid Sajjad, the modernism of Zubeida Agha, to the innovation of Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq. There is a rich vein of imagination that inspires art in Pakistan today. At 75, Pakistan, its people and art embrace new technologies and are ready to conquer new frontiers.

Image: In honour of today, we share Zahoor ul Akhlaq’s complex piece designed for Karachi’s Maritime Museum in the late 1990s. Created over months at the Naval Dockyard workshop, its metal bars invoke the body of a fish. Karachi Biennale shared and paid tribute to this work at its first curtain raiser in 2017.

Nitin Deckha holds a PhD in Anthropology from Rice University, Houston, and is a cultural anthropologist, educator, and learning facilitator.

Curator of KB22, Faisal Anwar, is a hybrid artist and an interactive producer working between Canada and Pakistan.

CEO of the Karachi Biennale, Niilofur Farrukh, is a Karachi-based art interventionist whose seminal initiatives have expanded the space for an art publication, curation, and public art. In 2017, along with a group of colleagues, Farrukh established the Karachi Biennale Trust to instrumentalise art to connect a fractured city to itself and the world.

You are invited to join us to celebrate the extraordinary life of Sheherezade Alam, the clay whisperer. She knew mitti like no other and spent a lifetime exploring it. This bond led to thousands of exquisite pots being born on her wheel and fired in her studio. She always looked at Studio Pottery as a continuum of the timeless clay traditions of humankind, and tirelessly and unconditionally, shared her passion, knowledge and clay wisdom with everyone.
Friends, fellow ceramists and all who where touch by her phenomenal spirit, are invited to come together and share their memories and pay tribute to Sheherezade Alam.
