Centuries before steam engines or steel rails, ancient Greeks built a kind of railway for ships. The Diolkos, constructed around the 6th century BCE, was a 6–8 km stone-paved roadway across the Isthmus of Corinth. Its purpose? To move ships between the Aegean and Ionian seas—without sailing around the Peloponnese, a long and dangerous journey.

Ships were hauled onto wooden sledges or wheeled carts and pulled along the Diolkos’ grooved limestone tracks by oxen and laborers. The grooves—some of which still exist—kept the vehicles aligned like modern rails.

The Diolkos served both military and commercial purposes, especially valuable for navies seeking speed and surprise. Triremes could be portaged overland and re-launched within hours.

The Diolkos may be the first large-scale overland ship transport system in history. It’s an ancient precursor to intermodal logistics and a reminder that the Greeks weren’t just philosophers—they were practical problem solvers.

It stayed in use for over 600 years.
