I recently watched a demonstration by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalia showcasing a portable water filtration system. What I saw was not a scientific demonstration; it was a magic show. And the public deserves to know the difference.

1. Poured about 1 liter of clean water into the system
2. Added about 1 liter of "brown" water, with zero disclosure of its chemical, bacterial, and viral composition.
3. Dropped in a plastic bag of soil. Again, with zero disclosure of its chemical, bacteria, and viral composition.
4 .Poured in about a pail of clean water
5. Opened the filter, showed clear water, and drank it
Voila. Clean water. Gatchalian and Claire Castro drank the water. Applause!

1. The most dangerous contaminants in water are invisible: Bacteria (E. coli, cholera, typhoid); viruses; protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium); dissolved heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury) and pesticides and industrial solvents. 3. A single sip is theater. Pathogens can take days to cause illness. Heavy metals cause harm over months and years. The official drinking a glass of water on camera is not evidence of safety. It is a performance.

If DSWD genuinely wants to prove their filtration system works, then stop using mud and start using water that is actually dangerous. Here is a demonstration that would mean something.
First, prepare water with real contaminants. Spike it with known concentrations of bacteria (E. coli, cholera, typhoid), viruses, protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), and dissolved heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury at levels found in real contaminated water sources.
Second, document the input. Have an independent, certified laboratory measure exactly what is in the "dirty" water before filtration.
Third, filter it. Run it through the system exactly as it would be used in the field.
Fourth, document the output. Have the same independent laboratory measure what remains after filtration, and publish the full results: input levels, output levels, filter pore size, and log reduction values.
Fifth, let Claire Castro and all Cabinet Officials, including the President and his family, drink the same filtered water for several days. Not one ceremonial sip for the camera. Drink only that filtered water with known contaminants prior to filtration, day after day, and let the results speak for themselves.
If the filter works, this demonstration would be the most powerful advertisement they could ever produce. If they refuse to do it, that refusal is the answer.
