There is a Japanese word called "Ma". It means the space between things, the pause that gives meaning. It is the silence between sounds, the moment before you respond.

Without Ma, everything feels crowded. Life becomes noisy, rushed, and heavy. But Ma reminds us that space is not empty. Space is where clarity appears, where your breath settles, where your emotions calm down.

In Japan, people don’t rush to fill every gap. They respect the pause, because growth happens there. Healing happens there. Even good decisions need Ma—a moment to stop pushing, a moment to listen inside.

If life feels overwhelming right now, you may not need more effort. You may need more Ma. Give yourself space today, and that space will take care of the rest.

Happy weekend, Arttalksph community.

The 80s taught me patience. No rewind, no delete, just do it right the first time. Still true on canvas.

Wings of Resilience: The Art of Basha

This week, ArtTalksPh features Lezelle Peregrin Ricohermoso, better known as “Basha.”

A 38-year-old visual artist from Ipil, Santa Cruz, Marinduque, Basha is a single mother of two whose journey in art is one of resilience and passion. Though her love for art began in childhood, life’s circumstances initially kept her from pursuing it fully. When faced with the challenges of single parenthood, she rediscovered her creative spark and has since embraced her calling as an artist.

Basha is an active member of the Artventure collective of Santa Cruz and serves as one of the board of trustees of the I Love Santa Cruz Marinduque Collectives. Her works have been showcased in numerous exhibitions and contests, and she continues to receive commissions that fuel her drive to create.

Beyond painting, Basha is also known for her unique mosaics crafted from butterfly wings, an art form that reflects both delicacy and strength, mirroring her own journey. With the support of her community and her unwavering determination, she continues to inspire others through her artistry and story.

Disclaimer:
ArtTalksPh is not connected, nor in any way involved, with the artist’s process of using butterfly wings in her artwork. The sourcing of butterfly wings is solely undertaken by the artist, who ensures that her practice does not harm living butterflies.
