September 30, 1897 is the date St. Therese died. She used the rose as a symbol of love and grace. She wrote about wanting to “let fall a shower of roses” after her death—meaning that she hoped to continue doing good and sending graces from heaven.

Today, I painted a rose for her to thank her for all the teachings and intercession she made.

The roses aren’t meant to mean that she literally sends physical roses. Rather, receiving or seeing a rose is traditionally regarded by devotees as a possible little sign or reminder of St. Thérèse’s intercession, especially when someone has prayed to her.

She also described herself as a little flower, which is why she is often called “The Little Flower.” 🌹

A beautiful poem to Our Lady of Sorrow

Our Lady of Sorrows

Beneath the Cross, she quietly stood,
A Mother’s heart where sorrow flowed;
Her eyes held tears, her soul was torn,
Yet still she loved the Son she bore.

No words could ease the piercing pain,
No earthly comfort could remain;
Yet through the darkness, deep and long,
Her faithful heart remained so strong.

O Mary, Mother of Sorrows,
Teach us courage for our tomorrows;
When grief arrives and hope seems small,
Teach us to trust through it all.

You knew the ache no heart can name,
Yet never turned away in shame;
You held your Son through suffering,
And showed us what true love can bring.

Our Lady, gentle, wounded, dear,
Stay close to us when we shed tears;
And when our crosses seem too great,
Lead us to Christ, and help us wait.

For where your sorrow met His grace,
Hope found its everlasting place;
O Mother, beneath your tender care,
Teach us to love, to trust, to bear.
