2.5-gallon underwater cave aquascape, commissioned by 6CycleMind vocalist / frontman and Laguna 2nd District board member, Mr. Tutti Caringal ().

The tank features a halfway buried red lava rock cave with detachable rock top for easier access during cleaning. Originally we wanted to create an underground tunnel but given this is a 2.5 gallon nanoscape, it’ll be hard to bury a structure without compromising enough fish swimming space. I wish I can take credit for this cave idea but this was all Tutti’s vision. Since he is planning to keep shrimps in this tank, he wanted a safe space for the shrimps to hide away from the main fish and peacefully graze on microalgae.

The process in creating this scape through challenging and tedious, was enjoyable. Assembling lava rocks together, while considering texture and the right miniature scale in mind felt like assembling 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles!

This build is ready to come home this week to continue the nitrogen cycle under the owner’s watch.

2-Gallon Nature Style Nano Aquascape, commissioned by Mr. Jericho Cruz. A handsome dumbo ear betta now lives in it. 😊🐟 Thank you for trusting 🌿🍸

In building an ideal home for a fancy betta, make sure to provide:
- dense vegetation: bettas love to explore, hide and rest among the aquatic plants. The plants also help maintain good water quality.
- smooth hardscaping: sharp-edged wood and rocks may damage their delicate scales and fins.
- filtration with flow control: most fancy bettas are not good swimmers due to drag of their heavy fins. It will be good for them to switch up the flow speed from time to time. Keep it in slow flow to help them relax. Turn it up a bit for a few minutes a day since they sometimes love to swim against the flow. It’s a good form of exercise and it helps avoid fish boredom. When a fancy betta is bored, they like to nip and tear on their own tails! 🫠

A cat, a summer tub pond, and my blooming Frangipani tree. 🐈 🛁🐟🪷🌸

I found a good outdoor spot to hold some of my extra aquatic plants. It gets direct sunlight early in the morning but is shaded by the leaves of the potted Frangipani tree by noon towards the afternoon. No filter, just plants potted in terracottas with aquasoil as medium. Floating plants like Amazon frogbit and dwarf water lettuce help regulate harsh direct sunlight and consume excess nutrients in the water too. Threw in some guppies to make sure no wrigglers will survive long enough to become mosquitoes.

I do 50% water change once a week, using nutrient-rich fish pond water in watering the nearby plants. So far all aquatic plants are doing A-ok! 🫶🏼

I’m now seriously considering of finally building the DIY Pond version 2.0 around this area of the garden. I know it is been long overdue, but my current concern is the nearest power outlet for the filtration and enough time to create and film the entire process. 🤔 If you haven’t seen the 3-part OG easy DIY Pond tutorial I’ve created a couple of years ago, it is still up in our Youtube channel. It’s summer now in the Philippines and we’re lucky to have a climate that allows us to do summer tubbing for pretty much the entire year. 🍸🌿

My mini 12x12cm water garden of 4 years, surviving with just regular water top offs and no water changes just gave me another Bacopa monnieri inflorescence. 🌸 What great feeling when you just leave things be and they always end up working out for you. Help it find balance then let nature take its course, they say. Happy Saturday. 🍸🌿

12” tall, 8” diameter cylinder betta aquascape, commissioned by Ms. Angela Villavicencio (). The tank is now a home to a handsome red and white dumbo ear betta, and is currently sitting nicely inside their café in Clark, Pampanga. If you have time, check out and say hello to their new fish! 😊

On the scaping table: 12” tall, 8” diameter cylinder betta scape. 🐠

Still on curing mode after putting together the wood and rocks in place using aquarium safe sealant and cyanoacrylate. Curing ensures the adhesives are fully dried up, and chemicals that may leach in the water have evaporated. Depending on the brand you use, some harden up quickly versus the others. I really don’t like the ones with super strong smell, it means longer curing time. 😕 🌿🍸

Working with plants is like working with kids—it can sometimes be difficult and tricky. Took a while to establish this aquascape for Ms. Ina Villanueva, but I’m just grateful for her patience. Within first few weeks, some of the plants’ leaves we’re melting. With how it is looking now, I’m glad we waited.

“Canopy”
Nano Aquascape by The Indoor Wetlands

Commissioned by Mr. Ken Yamat, this aquascape is finally ready to come home tomorrow. A mossy wood canopy looms over the lowtech plants and rocks. Enough space is left to allow fish to swim through and hide under the shade whenever they need to.
