🎭 MISS MANILA (Chinoy Chismis: A Live Performance Series) — Tsinoy Marriage Under Martial Law: Strindberg’s Miss Julie Reimagined

As the final installment of the Chinoy Chismis Trilogy, this production reimagines August Strindberg’s Miss Julie through the lens of a Chinese-Filipino household navigating love, class, and control during a politically tense era in Philippine history. ✨

Set in 1975 Binondo, the story follows a former beauty queen caught between duty and desire when a quiet attraction unfolds between her and the family driver. A connection that slowly challenges reputation, hierarchy, and everything kept behind closed doors. 👀💔

More than a romance, the play reflects how pressure shapes family life where appearances must be maintained, silence is expected, and emotions are often negotiated. 🏮

Produced by Platform Playhouse in collaboration with UP Dulaang Laboratoryo, this production serves as the undergraduate thesis of GK Diola () (BA Theatre Arts, UP Diliman), under the guidance of Mr. Jonas Gabriel M. Garcia and Asst. Prof. Robert Arlou De Guzman.

"MARISSA: ANG RADIKAL NA PAGSIBOL AT PAGTATAPOS NG IKA-48 NA TAON NG
TEATRO TOMASINO"

MANILA PHILIPPINES—Para sa ika-48 nitong taon, inihahandog ng Teatro Tomasino ang Marissa. Sa panulat ni Isagani Cruz at direksyon ni Angel Ocampo, ang Marissa ay isang dulang may ganap na haba tungkol sa buhay sining, pagsusulat, at ang marami nitong kabaliwan.

Alinsunod sa temang ng “Sibol”, binibigyang diin ng Marissa ang tunay na kapangyarihan ng sining na maging isang tulay upang pag-alabin hindi lamang ang entablado, kundi ang bawat isang may tiwala at tunay na pagmamahal rito. Hindi ito lamang nabubuo ng kaakit-akit na ilaw, kasuotan, o pag-arte—kundi pagsalungat sa karaniwan at pagpapalaya sa katotohanan na pilit na ibinabaon. Sapagkat ang sining, sa lahat ng anyo nito, ay palaging isang uri ng paglaban sa lahat ng nagsisikap na patahimikin ang sariling totoo. Ang “Marissa” ay isang paalala na kahit sa mga panahong walang katiyakan ang buhay, ang sining ay nandoon pa rin, umuusbong, at hindi tumitigil.

Kung kaya’t layunin ng produksiyong ito na maging daan sa pagpapatunay kung saan ang sining ay hindi lamang talento at pagtatanghal, kundi isang puwersang pinagyayaman ang bawat pusong naghahanap ng katarungan. Ang sining at pagbuo ng “Marissa” ang kolektibong diwa ng rebolusyonaryong pagsibol ng Teatro Tomasino na patuloy na naghahangad na mabuhay, lumikha at lumaban. Para sa kanyang disertasyon, kailangang interbyuhin ng estudyanteng si Mario ang tanyag na mandudula na si Corazon Roja. Ang dapat na simpleng usapa’y nauwi sa isang hapon puno ng samu’t saring kalokohan.

Ang “Marissa” ay itatanghal sa Abril 28-30 (12:30 NH, 3:00 NH, 6:00 NG) at Mayo 2 (10:00 NU, 12:30 NH, 3:00 NH, 6:00 NG) na gaganapin sa Tan Yan Kee Audio Visual Room, University of Santo Tomas.
