In a functioning legislature, Alan Peter Cayetano would likely have already lost the Senate presidency after the chaos surrounding Bato dela Rosa’s stay inside the Senate, the gunfight incident, and the growing perception that the chamber became a political safehouse instead of an institution of accountability.

Yet APC remains in power. The reason is simple, too many members of the current majority are themselves facing serious controversies, investigations, or legal threats. That reality creates a bloc bound less by shared governance and more by mutual political survival.

This is why many Filipinos now fear that the Senate is no longer operating primarily as a democratic institution, but as a protection network for the politically powerful. Because once leaders begin prioritizing self-preservation over public accountability, institutions stop looking credible and start looking compromised.

WHEN SURVIVAL IS PUNISHED AND POWER IS SHELTERED

An elderly harmonica busker was jailed for a week after being arrested under an anti-mendicancy ordinance, saying he was only trying to earn money to feed his grandchild. He has since been released.

At the same time, Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has faced scrutiny after taking refuge and later leaving the Senate amid an International Criminal Court arrest warrant, raising renewed questions on how the justice system treats the poor versus the powerful.

KAREN SEEKS ACCOUNTABILITY OVER BATO'S SENATE EXIT, QUESTIONS SECURITY LAPSE

Broadcast journalist Karen Davila on Thursday, May 14, called for accountability over Sen. Bato Dela Rosa's reported exit from the Senate amid a tense overnight security situation inside the chamber.

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Davila questioned how Dela Rosa was able to leave the Senate building despite earlier assurances from officials that he remained inside during the incident.

"Someone has to be made accountable for Bato's escape," she said, adding that senior security officials had entered the Senate complex the previous night to secure senators.

She noted that the public was initially told that Dela Rosa was "on the 5th floor, in his room, resting," while his lawyer also earlier posted a video purportedly showing him inside the Senate.

"The senate building should've been secured last night - no one in, no one out," Davila said, calling for clarity on the sequence of events.

"We need answers. How did Bato escape? Who helped him?" she added.

In a follow-up post, she summed up the issue as: "Nakatakas o pinatakas?"
