From the halls of La Salle University to public service, Dir. Fernando D. Sumondong, MT, PhD, CESE, continues to exemplify the Lasallian values of excellence, leadership, and service. A proud LSU alumnus and former faculty member, coordinator, and dean, he has dedicated decades to advancing education and public administration. During his tenure with the Department of Education, he also served in key leadership capacities as Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) and OIC Assistant Schools Division Superintendent (OIC-ASDS) for the Division of Camiguin, demonstrating his commitment and capability in leading educational institutions.

Today, as Director IV/Regional Director of the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) Region IX, he continues to make a meaningful impact through dedicated public service. The Lasallian community proudly celebrates his inspiring journey and wishes him continued success as he serves with integrity, compassion, and excellence.

The session covered kicking, blocking, kata, and bunkai.

Aspirants completed their fitness record, including yoga, ki projection, hara training, skipping rope, and focus drills using throwing balls, followed by kicking exercises.

Training continues with discipline, focus, and respect.

The Philippines is set to welcome one of the world’s biggest youth karate tournaments as it hosts the third leg of the Karate One-Youth League from May 14 to 17, 2026, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Karate One-Youth League is an international competition for karate athletes aged 14 to 17, drawing young talents from across the globe. The 2026 series will begin in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (February 12–15), followed by Harare, Zimbabwe (March 27–29), before heading to Manila. Other scheduled stops include Porec, Croatia (July 2–5), Guadalajara, Mexico (September 17–21), and Venice, Italy (December 10–13).

To determine the Philippine representatives, a National Championships will be held in March in Tagaytay City, Cavite, where young karatekas will compete for slots in the prestigious event.

When asked about the chances of Filipino athletes, Karate Pilipinas president Richard Lim said, “We can't say for now since most of them will be competing for the first in a high-caliber championships.”

Around 100 countries are expected to participate, making it the largest karate event to be staged in the country since the 2024 Asian Youth (Cadet, Junior and U21) Karate Championships held at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Lim emphasized the importance of hosting youth-level tournaments, saying, “We started hosting the Youth since last year to promote and upgrade our young athletes because they will be the next generation of karatekas in the Philippines. Also to give them world-class karate event. Those who will not participate will benefit from it by experiencing the hosting.”

Beyond his role as an official, Lim is also a decorated former athlete, having achieved a career-best No. 8 world ranking. His accolades include medals from the SEA Games, Asian Games, and Asian Karate Championships.

The event is being organized with the support of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), which leads the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee (NST-IAC). Under Administrative Order No. 38, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on October 29, PSC Chair Patrick “Pato” Gregorio serves as committee chair, with the Department of Tourism as vice-chair. Other member agencies include the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Budget and Management, Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
