The Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) is now accepting contributions for the 19th issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature. The journal will be made available later this year through panitikanph.com and journals.upd.edu.ph.
The Philippinesโ leading literary peer-reviewed journal, the Likhaan Journal is published annually with funding from the University of the Philippines. It features the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino, and is open to all Filipinos, whether based in the country or based abroad. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and double-blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP.

1. Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature accepts submissions in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:
-๐๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ ranging from about 12 to 20 pages (about 4,000 to 7,500 words) double-spaced, in Times New Roman, font size 12. A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.
-๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ/๐ฌ๐๐ก๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above)
-๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).
Literary and personal essays, including memoirs, profiles, etc., subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).
-๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง ๐ฉ๐จ๐๐ฆ๐ฌ, out of which the editors might choose three to five. Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.
-๐๐ฑ๐๐๐ซ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ, or full, short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6โ x 9.โ Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.
-๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ, works that are published and soon-to-be-published, and works-in-progress will not be accepted.
2. All submissions must be original and previously unpublished. This must be certified by a signed letter stating that the work is unpublished, and accompanied by a biographical sketch of no more than one or two short paragraphs.
3. Only one submission per genre is allowed. Multiple submissions must be done in separate Google Forms.
4. Contributors must also include an abstract and at least three keywords in English that will facilitate searching and archiving of the work.
5. Submissions must be submitted via the provided Google Form link, following the required sections as well as the required document format.
6. The submission portal closes on March 31, 2025. Please write the best you can within the allotted time.
You will get a receipt from the GForm as proof of your submission.
Writers whose work will be accepted for publication will receive cash payment and a copy of the published journal. In order to receive the honorarium, ๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ง๐ค ๐๐๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ.
The editors reserve the right to edit any and all materials accepted for publication. The editors may also solicit or commission special, non-refereed articles for publication outside of the aforementioned genres and categories to enhance the editorial content and balance of the journal.
