in the Philippines casual misogyny, toxic masculinity & disregard for women is older than we realise; it's a colonial-era thing too as we can see in these excerpts from "Without Seeing the Dawn" by Stevan Javellana, orig. published 1947 & set in WWII Iloilo.

we see disgusting catcalling from male dockworkers vs women passing by, and even treating wives as borderline-disposable "pleasure objects" of men -- and mistresses doubly so because they're actually-"disposable" in the sense of not being married.

sure we could argue it was a "different era" back then but we doubt it should have been acceptable then, and it certainly shouldn't be any more acceptable now.

this Women's Month we keep fighting for all women's rights to respect, such that in future Philippine literature misogyny will just be a dim period stain we were better off leaving behind in history.

shoutout to Exploding Galaxies for helping recover these "lost" & obscure Philippine literature classics!

we appreciate & support them since we have similar goals ourselves.

These elegant, boxy, inspired works come from a small independent press known as Exploding Galaxies. And what they specialize in is even more special β€” republishing the lost works of Philippine literature.
