A 21-year-old woman died Saturday after falling from a bridge during a bungee jumping event when staff allegedly failed to attach a safety rope before the jump.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was participating in a rope-jumping activity from the Ponte do Esqueleto, or Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo, when the accident occurred.
Witnesses told authorities that de Freitas was pushed from the bridge without being connected to a safety line, causing her to plunge approximately 40 meters to the ground, according to reports.
Video shared on social media reportedly shows staff members carrying de Freitas, who was wearing a helmet, to the edge of the bridge before launching her into the jump. Moments later, a person filming the event can be heard shouting, "
Guys, the rope!" while pointing to a rope that remained on the bridge.
Emergency responders, including a police helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, but de Freitas was pronounced dead.
According to Brazilian media reports, de Freitas had purchased a guided tour that included the jump from the abandoned bridge.
Before the incident, she allegedly posted a lighthearted message on social media joking, "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?"
Authorities detained six people for questioning following the fatal fall. Three men were arrested at the scene and face charges of homicide with implied malice.
Investigators are examining whether organizers followed required safety procedures.
