"Take care while entering and leaving the train! The carriage sways!" 🚟

The classic film METROPOLIS was made in 1926 … and is set in the year 2026!

What is the plot of what is perhaps the most famous of all silent films?

The population of METROPOLIS, the “City of the Future,” is divided into workers, who are forced to live in the dark underworld, and the wealthy, who enjoy a futuristic city full of splendor. The images illustrating the tense balance between these two societies are among the most iconic of the 20th century.

Did director Fritz Lang hit the nail on the head with his vision of our present day? Grab some popcorn and see for yourself.

2026 is not only the year in which Fritz Lang’s world-famous futuristic dystopia METROPOLIS is set; it is also the 50th anniversary of the director’s death. To mark the occasion, we are presenting a selection of significant classics from the cinema of the Weimar Republic, alongside METROPOLIS itself.

These early expressionist masterpieces were made during a fascinating period of transition from silent to sound film. To this day, Weimar cinema is regarded as one of the most productive and influential chapters in German filmmaking, one that has lastingly shaped the international perception of German film.

We hope you enjoy (re-)discovering them!
