IN CONVERSATION — Arlene Sy

Looking back on Serene, we revisit Arlene Sy’s return to painting after a long hiatus and the reflections that shaped the exhibition.

In coming back to her practice, Arlene learned to meet the work where she was—to trust her intuition, follow what moved her, and let curiosity take the place of certainty. What she once saw as time away from art became part of the renewal that ultimately shaped Serene.

In this conversation, Arlene reflects on stepping away and returning, the value of making by hand, white space and stillness, and how the places we experience continue to shape the way we see and create.

Meet the artist behind Serene — Arlene Sy

Arlene Sy’s practice is rooted in close observation of nature, people, and the small details that shape everyday life. Working primarily in watercolor, she brings together experience across illustration, publishing, design, and independent creative work.

Her paintings often return to landscapes, botanical forms, and everyday scenes, approached with lightness, and a contemplative eye.

With Serene, Sy returns to painting with a renewed openness to experimentation, extending her watercolor practice through bolder color, minimalism, and flatter visual elements.
