For many Iskolar ng Bayan, the blooming Mussaenda, fondly known as "Doña," is fast becoming a favorite symbol of the UPLB graduation season. ❤️💚

Beyond its beauty lies a rich UPLB story rooted right here in Elbi soil. Back in 1915, pioneering UPLB forestry professor Calixto Mabesa discovered Mussaenda philippica (kahoy-dalaga) on Tuntungin Hill. The iconic Mussaenda 'Doña Aurora' is actually believed to be a natural mutant of this native species. Decades later, researchers at the UPLB Institute of Plant Breeding developed numerous outstanding varieties, helping establish Mussaenda as one of the Philippines' most important contributions to the global ornamental horticulture industry. 🌿

🌸 Fun fact: The colorful "petals" that make Mussaenda so eye-catching are actually modified leaves (bracts)*—not petals at all! The true flowers are the small, star-shaped blossoms at the center, while the enlarged sepals develop in brilliant shades of white, pink, yellow, or red to attract pollinators. 🐝

The next time you pose beside a blooming Doña on campus, remember that it is more than just a beautiful ornamental plant. It's a living piece of UPLB's scientific heritage that is slowly but surely blossoming into a cherished graduation tradition. ❤️🌻

*edit: bracts, not sepals

Throwback to last year's UPLB Graduation. 💚❤️
I've always wanted to take graduation photos during the commencement exercises. It only happened when I was graduating myself, grabbing a few shots whenever there was a chance. 📸

Look | Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury together in the dusk sky this past week.

Skywatching is one of my hobbies, and seeing Mercury was a treat. It's not always easy to spot since it stays close to the Sun, isn't particularly bright, and often sits low on the horizon. ✨

I used Stellarium app to help locate the planets. 🌌

Look: It's fire tree season again! 😍

Although the fire tree (Delonix regia) is a non-native species, and is not recommended for reforestation, its vibrant red-orange flowers and broad canopy make it a popular ornamental tree in parks and campuses. 🌳

Look: the skies over UPLB Freedom Park were filled with color and creativity last May 4 during “Saranggola: Layag ng Pag-asa.”

Featuring handcrafted kites made by ARTS 1 students, the activity organized by the UPLB Visual and Performing Arts Division and UPLB General Education Program celebrated art, expression, and hope through kite flying. 🪁
