St. Mary’s College of Catbalogan (SMCC) sets a new benchmark in local tech education as its fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) students become the first in the city to earn globally recognized micro-credentials from the Cisco Networking Academy (NetAcad) Program.

Established earlier in 2026, the partnership between SMCC and Cisco NetAcad marks a strategic step toward aligning academic instruction with international industry standards. Through this initiative, students gain direct access to certification pathways that are widely recognized in the global workforce.

As part of their Information Assurance and Security course during the second semester of Academic Year 2025–2026, fourth-year BSCS students successfully completed four specialized cybersecurity courses: Introduction to Cybersecurity, Endpoint Security, Cyber Threat Management, and Ethical Hacker. These micro-credentials are designed to develop job-ready competencies and serve as qualifications for entry-level roles in cybersecurity and related fields.

The following fourth-year BSCS students are recognized for this milestone achievement:

This accomplishment highlights SMCC’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates by embedding globally aligned certifications into its curriculum. Beyond theoretical instruction, the program emphasizes hands-on, skills-based learning that prepares students to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Looking ahead, the BS Computer Science program aims to expand its integration of Cisco NetAcad offerings across multiple domains, including Cybersecurity, Networking, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Programming, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy. This forward-looking direction ensures that both students and faculty remain competitive, adaptive, and equipped with relevant technological competencies.

We are currently live with “Beyond the Air Gap: Navigating Data Privacy and GRC in Operational Technology”, where participants are gaining valuable insights on data privacy, cybersecurity, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) in today’s interconnected IT and OT environments. Led by Ms. Gen Macalinao, this session highlights real-world challenges, best practices, and practical approaches in managing operational technology risks.

On 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 13, 2025, our 𝗕𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 students attended 𝗗𝗲𝘃8 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗟𝗘 2025 held at 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 – 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 (𝗣𝗦𝗛𝗦-𝗘𝗩𝗖), 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗼, 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗲. a full day of learning and tech discussions with industry speakers and the local tech community.

The event gave us helpful insights into software development and current technologies, and allowed us to connect with fellow tech enthusiasts. It was a meaningful experience that encouraged us to keep learning and improving our skills as future developers.
