From the birthplace of the balangay to the shores of Australia.

The Agusan-Butuan Artists Association proudly presents Launching Histories, a send-off exhibition for Balangay: A Transpacific Journey, an international exhibition that will represent Butuan's rich maritime heritage and contemporary artistic voices in Melbourne, Australia.

Inspired by the balangay—the ancient vessel that carried our ancestors across seas and connected cultures throughout the region—the exhibition brings together works that reflect journeys, memory, migration, identity, and the enduring ties between past and present.

Exhibit opens on June 22, 2026 6PM.

The Balangay was not merely a vessel. It was the earliest known form of community, a word that, in the old tongue, became barangay: the gathering of those who travel together. Balangay: A Transpacific Journey, Bridging Traditions brings to Melbourne a curated exhibition of works by selected Filipino artists, each shaped by lineage, displacement, and the long labor of cultural continuity.

Presented within the Philippine Consulate General, the works hold what distance cannot erase: the persistence of forms, of memory, of a culture that has always known how to survive a crossing. This is an exhibition about what is carried forward, and what it costs to carry it.

Organized by the Agusan Artists Association in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General, Melbourne.

Opening Reception July 11, 2026 at 2 pm.
Philippine Consulate General, Melbourne Level 10, 257 Collins Street, Melbourne 3000, Australia.

Big things are on the horizon for the Agusan Artists Association!

In 2026 and 2027, the collective sets its sights on an exciting new chapter—bringing fresh projects from the heart of Agusan to museum spaces and international venues. Rooted in heritage yet boldly contemporary, these upcoming exhibitions will celebrate the region’s stories, landscapes, and creative spirit while connecting with audiences far beyond our shores.

From local inspiration to global stages, the journey continues as Agusan artists share their vision, culture, and imagination with the world.

UGPAANAN — Visual Tales of the Agusan Wetland Sanctuary
Gent, Belgium, 2022

A gathering of stories, images, and voices rooted in the living landscape of the Agusan Wetlands. The exhibit unfolded through visual works, talks, workshops, and performances—bringing together members of the Agusan Artists Association and the Balangay Artists Association in a shared act of cultural exchange.

From wetland narratives to contemporary expressions, UGPAANAN traced memory, ecology, and community across borders. Today, both collectives continue this journey as they prepare for upcoming museum and international exhibitions.

Exhibit 1 for March
Celebrating the National Women's Month

“Dance of the Tropical Birds” is part of my “Vivariums” series. The artwork is inspired by women doing videos for social media platforms during the pandemic, not just to alleviate boredom but also to create something productive, creative, and inspiring for themselves and also for others.
Whatever challenges women encounter, they always rise up to them with strength, beauty, and grace.

Congratulations to the Agusan Artists Association and the Balangay Artists Association participants!
