The end of August is the time when children in many countries go back to school after their summer holidays. But millions of children are barred from the classroom by poverty, discrimination, conflict, and crisis.

According to UNESCO, in 2025, an estimated 272 million children and young people are out of school – a drastic increase of more than 21 million from the year before.

Students in Afghanistan and Gaza have missed out on years of learning that will affect their entire lives.

The right to education is for everyone.

Investment in education is the most cost-effective way to overcome inequalities, build resilience, and support sustainable development.

Education is a pathway for personal development and social cohesion. All states need to do everything they can to support children, and all students, to learn.
