APOY CULTURAL PRACTICE: GUINA-ANG, BONTOC MT. PROVINCE
Apoy practice of Guina-ang, Bontoc, is a traditional post-planting culture rooted in faith, unity, and respect for nature. By lighting ritual fires in the rice fields, offering prayers to Lumawig/Kafunyan (God), and observing strict community rest days (te-er/ngilin), the people seek protection for their crops and honor the land. More than an agricultural routine, it serves as a vital social homecoming where families reunite, share food, and perform the celebratory gong dance (pattong) to keep their indigenous identity and community bond strong.

The Baguio Youth Cultural Fest

Performance description:
They will present a war dance, which portrays the courage, strength, and unity of the Cordilleran people.
The powerful movements and rhythmic steps represent the warrior spirit of the ancestors and their role in protecting their community, land, and traditions. War dance is the singing and playing of gongs, symbolizing the vibrancy, joy, and living spirit of the different ethnic groups.
The performance then transitions into a story of love and courtship, where a young man expresses his affection and sincere intentions toward a woman. This introduces the traditional courtship dance known as Tupayya. Through graceful movements, gestures, and the rhythmic sound of the gongs, the young man communicates respect, sincerity, admiration, and love.
