🧯 Test Your Smoke Alarm Once a Month
💡 Did you know?
A smoke alarm can save your life—but only if it is working.
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends testing smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the TEST button. Smoke alarms should generally be replaced 10 years from their manufacture date.

🏠 Where should you have them?
Ideally, install smoke alarms:
🛏️ Inside every bedroom
🚪 Outside sleeping areas
🏢 On every level of the home
🔗 Interconnected when possible, so when one alarm sounds, the others sound too.

✅ Your 30-second monthly check
Press and hold the TEST button.
Make sure you hear a loud alarm.
If it uses replaceable batteries, replace them according to the manufacturer's instructions—USFA's general guidance is at least annually.
Check the manufacture date.
If the alarm is 10 years old, replace the entire unit.

⚠️ One important mistake to avoid
Never remove the battery just because the alarm keeps sounding, such as from cooking or steam. Use the hush function if available and clear the air instead. Disabling the alarm leaves you unprotected.

🔥 Remember this:
“A smoke alarm is useful only when it can warn you.”
And during an actual fire, get outside and stay outside. You may have less than 2 minutes to escape after the smoke alarm sounds.

Today's simple action: Before you sleep tonight, look around your home and ask: **“Can I hear my smoke alarm if it sounds?”**
