After Midnight
Chapter Two: The Surprise
I wasn't expecting him.
That morning felt like any other. I was busy with my routine when my phone rang.
"I'm outside."
I frowned at the screen, thinking it was a joke.
Outside?
I slowly walked to the gate, my heart pounding harder with every step.
And there he was.
Standing in front of me.
For the first time, he wasn't just a voice after midnight or a name on my phone. He was real. He smiled when our eyes met, and for a moment, everything I had imagined about him seemed true.
He looked neat and well-dressed. His hair was fixed, his shirt was freshly pressed, and he carried himself with quiet confidence.
"Surprise," he said with a nervous smile.
I couldn't help but smile back.
"You should've told me you were coming."
"I wanted to surprise you."
For the next few hours, everything felt... normal.
We talked.
We laughed.
We shared stories we'd never told over the phone.
He was kind, respectful, and attentive. Anyone looking at us would probably think we had known each other forever.
But something didn't feel right.
Every few minutes, he would glance at his phone.
Sometimes he'd turn the screen away before I could accidentally see it.
When it vibrated, he'd quickly silence it.
His smile would disappear for a second before he looked back at me as if nothing had happened.
I told myself not to overthink it.
Everyone has work.
Everyone gets messages.
But my heart refused to be convinced.
There was a heaviness in his eyesβas if part of him was somewhere else.
When I asked simple questions about his life, he answered... but never completely.
It was like reading a book with missing pages.
As the afternoon faded, he looked at the time again.
"I should go."
"So soon?"
"I'm sorry... I have something I need to take care of."
He hugged me before leaving.
It was warm.
Comforting.
And somehow...
It felt like goodbye.
I watched his car disappear down the road until I couldn't see it anymore.
That night, just after midnight, my phone lit up.
"Thank you for today. I really enjoyed seeing you."
I stared at the message.
If today was so special...
Then why did it still feel like he was hiding behind a door he refused to open?
For the first time, I realized that being physically close to someone doesn't always mean they're emotionally present.
Sometimes, the biggest distance between two people isn't measured in miles.
It's measured by the secrets one of them refuses to tell.
