The Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo 2026 concluded on a high note yesterday evening in Wewak, with a dazzling fireworks display proudly sponsored by the Sandaun Provincial Government.

The three-day event was trouble-free and filled with excitement, meaningful networking, knowledge sharing, cultural exchange, business engagements, and celebration of Papua New Guinea’s finest cocoa.

Farmers, cooperatives, international buyers, chocolatiers, and government representatives gathered for the annual showcase, strengthening partnerships and promoting direct market access for local cocoa producers. The Expo also featured competitions, training sessions, product demonstrations, and one-on-one engagements between farmers and global industry players.

Throughout the event, participants experienced a vibrant atmosphere that highlighted innovation in cocoa production, quality improvement, and value addition, further reinforcing the importance of agriculture in driving economic growth.

As the curtains closed with fireworks lighting up the Wewak sky, delegations from across the country have begun travelling back to their respective districts and provinces, carrying with them new connections, insights, and renewed motivation to enhance cocoa production.

For the first time, judges have declared three equal winnersafter confirming that all top samples reached the same exceptional quality standard— making it nearly impossible to separate a single champion.

Defending champions Milne Bay Province are back on the national stage, eyeing to defend their cocoa title at the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo currently underway in Wewak.

Milne Bay claimed top honours at the 2023 Cocoa of Excellence Show hosted in Alotau, setting a benchmark for quality cocoa production in Papua New Guinea. Their return to this year’s competition signals strong intent to retain the prestigious title.

Adding weight to their presence, Douglas Tomuriesa, Member for Kiriwina-Goodenough, and Ricky Morris, Member for Alotau Open, are also in Wewak to witness the event and show their support for the province’s cocoa farmers.

Their attendance highlights the importance of the cocoa industry to Milne Bay and reinforces the province’s commitment to agricultural excellence and economic growth through cocoa.
As final judging continues, Milne Bay remains confident, banking on its proven track record and the dedication of its farmers. However, with strong competition from other cocoa-producing provinces, the battle for the top spot remains intense.
The nation now waits in anticipation to see whether Milne Bay will successfully defend its title or if a new champion will emerge from the highly competitive field.

Thirty-six cocoa farmers have taken center stage in a budding competition at the ongoing Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo in Wewak.

The competition, one of the key activities on the final day of the Expo, brings together skilled farmers to demonstrate the important technique of cocoa budding, a critical method used to improve cocoa quality, increase yield, and strengthen disease resistance.

Farmers from across the Sepik region and other cocoa-producing provinces are competing head-to-head, carefully selecting budwood and grafting onto rootstocks under the watchful eyes of technical judges and international cocoa partners.

Organizers say the budding competition is not just about winning, but about promoting best agricultural practices that can directly impact the quality of cocoa produced in Papua New Guinea. With global buyers and chocolatiers present at the Expo, the demonstration also highlights the level of skill and knowledge local farmers possess.

The event has drawn strong interest from participants and spectators alike, as each farmer works with precision and speed, knowing that proper budding techniques play a major role in producing high, quality cocoa beans that meet international standards.

Wewak, East Sepik Province — The final day of the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo is intensifying, with the top 59 cocoa cooperative and farmer groups now engaged in one-on-one interviews with international cocoa experts.

These sessions are focused on quality improvement, where global partners including chocolatiers, chocolate factory owners, and international buyers are directly engaging with local producers. The discussions are centered on enhancing bean quality, fermentation practices, and meeting international market standards, marking a critical moment where knowledge exchange meets real market opportunity.

As the clock ticks closer to the much-anticipated announcement of Papua New Guinea’s top cocoa, today’s program is also showcasing practical skills and community participation through two key competitions the budding competition and the hot chocolate competition.

The budding competition highlights technical skills in cocoa propagation, an essential aspect of sustaining and improving cocoa production in the region. Meanwhile, the hot chocolate competition has drawn excitement on the ground, with participants demonstrating local innovation by transforming cocoa into rich, organic beverages.

The atmosphere in Wewak is filled with anticipation, as farmers, stakeholders, and international guests await the final results. After days of rigorous judging, including assessments of dry beans, roasted beans, and 75 percent chocolate, the best of the best is set to be revealed.

With only a few hours remaining, Papua New Guinea stands on the verge of crowning its number one cocoa, a milestone that not only celebrates excellence but also strengthens the country’s position in the global cocoa market.

The West Sepik Provincial Government has been widely acknowledged for its meaningful contribution towards the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo 2026 currently underway in Wewak.

Through its Provincial Administration, Sandaun committed K250,000 as a Silver Sponsor, with the clear purpose of strengthening Greater Sepik collaboration as the host region of the Expo. The support reflects a shared vision among Sepik provinces to work collectively in promoting cocoa development and maximizing economic opportunities for rural communities.

In addition to the financial contribution, Sandaun also provided one thousand rounds of fireworks to support the event’s official program, adding a celebratory atmosphere to the gathering of farmers, industry players, and international partners.

The West Sepik delegation demonstrated strong commitment by travelling to Wewak both by road and air to participate in the Expo, reinforcing the importance of unity and presence in such a significant regional event.

The contribution underscores the importance of inter-provincial cooperation within the Greater Sepik, positioning the Expo not only as a platform for trade and quality recognition, but also as a symbol of collective effort and regional partnership.

Event organizers have described West Sepik's support as timely and strategic, noting that such collaboration is essential in driving the success of the Expo and ensuring long-term benefits for cocoa farmers across the region.
