One thing thst really frustrates me is the behavior and lack of awareness about media ethics and best practices by photographers.

They show up with their cameras, snapping away at people when they are at their most vulnerable. I have seen mothers crying, fathers holding back tears, children breaking down, and right there, someone is capturing it all without asking.

To me, that feels wrong. Grief is private. Funerals are sacred. They are not photo opportunities unless the family themselves wants those memories kept. When you point a camera at someone’s pain, without their knowledge or consent, you are not just taking a picture. You are taking away their dignity.

I want to say this directly to photographers in PNG, do not bring your camera to a funeral unless you have been invited, paid, or given consent by the immediate family. It is that simple. If the family asks for photos, then by all means, do your work respectfully. But if they have not, leave the camera at home.

Funerals are not concerts. They are not sporting events. They are moments of farewell, of vulnerability, of love and loss. If you truly respect the people you serve, then respect their privacy as well.

And let me remind you that privacy is not just a moral issue, it is also a legal one. Under Papua New Guinea’s Cybercrime Act 2016, sharing images online without consent can amount to invasion of privacy or even emotional abuse. Likewise, if your photographs are published in a way that causes harm to a family’s reputation or dignity, PNG’s Defamation Act gives them the right to sue you.

You might think you are just documenting, but one day you could find yourself facing a lawsuit, police complaints, or even fines because you crossed the line between journalism and intrusion.

Let’s be honest. Would you want your own tears, your own breakdown, photographed and shared without your permission? I do not think so.

So, to my fellow photographers, I am not saying stop documenting our culture or stop using your talent. But I am saying this: learn to draw the line. If you are not invited, if you are not asked, do not intrude. Respect the family, respect the grief, respect the moment.

Because at the end of the day, some things are too sacred to be captured by a lens.

Take note and adjust accordingly 👌
