HaHa Around The World

HaHa Around The World HaHa - Jana Harušťáková and Martin Habčák. We are two Czecho-Slovak travellers who decided to (mostly) hitchhike the world. Join us and follow our trip :)

Our estimated route around the world should meander along the line Latin America – Oceania – Asia while we assume it will take us something between two to three years. We neither have any big sponsors nor viarous aims to attract the world’s attention and that’s why we have to travel on the low scale and to work somewhere on the way. Despite this we want to attend some volunteering projects and als

o collect the cultural and gastronomic traits of different coutries for you. This site is more up-to-date version of our website http://hahatrip.wordpress.com/. Naša predpokladaná cesta okolo sveta by sa mala kľukatiť po línii Latinská Amerika – Oceánia – Ázia, pričom dĺžku cesty odhadujeme na niečo medzi dvoma až troma rokmi. Nemáme žiadnych veľkých sponzorov a ani rozmanité ciele na pritiahnutie svetovej pozornosti, preto musíme cestovať skromne a niekde po ceste určite aj pracovať. Napriek tomu ale chceme počas cesty pomáhať v rámci dobrovoľníckych projektov a tiež pre vás zhromažďovať kultúrne a gastronomické zvláštnosti rôznych krajín. Táto stránka je aktuálnejšou verziou našej webstránky http://hahatrip.wordpress.com/.

Even though Arequipa is known as the White City, it is a city of many coulours, too. Be it the colourful Peruvian clothes or an interesting play of light, one can discover many surprises while walking the streets.

Arequipa, the second most populated city of Peru, is considered to be a Spanish island in an indigenous sea - in no other Peruvian place you will find so many examples of the European colonial architecture. Since we are in South America where "colonial" is a synonym for "white", Arequipa is also being known as the White City of Peru.

Welcome to Arequipa, the city in a valley overlooked by three high volcanoes - Pichu Pichu, Misti and Chachani (the first two of them on this picture), what makes it the city with one of the best sceneries in South America. Wherever you go and wherever you look, these three sentinels will be there, watching you from their glorious heights.

After many thousands of kilometers in all the South American countries, Peru, the most touristy of all, is finally here! As good adventurers, we spent our first night directly on the border. Why? Because nothing beats the sign, gigantic flag and two gringos in a tent welcoming you to the country! ^_^

We spent our last days in Chile in Iquique, an unique city where Atacama desert meets the ocean. Iquique was originally a Peruvian town, only ceded to Chile after the War of the Pacific in the late 19th century. It is well-known for its huge duty-free commercial zone and for (as it is always the case with all northern cities in Chile) copper mining. But the main reason for our visit was different yet - to meet our dear amiga Nikol, who we got to know during Jana's career as a waitress in the south of Chile. :)

Does the first picture look familiar to you? :) Don't worry, we didn't decide to post the same photos again and again. These are not from the well known Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, but from another beautiful salar we visited on the way from northern Argentina to Chile.
P.S. We bet you missed our succesful "llama of the day" series from the very beginning of this page, didin't you? So here you go - including some salty ones. :)

CZECHO-SLOVAK SPECIAL: And so we got back, for the last time on our journey, to Argentina. Our steps led directly to one special place - in Gran Chaco province, on the main rail and road route across northern Argentina to Salta, there is a town with simple name Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. Why is it so special? This town was cofounded by the Czechoslovak immigrants and their community keeps its traditions and love to the countries of their ancestors till nowadays, forming the largest Czecho-Slovak community in South America. Ako môžete vidieť na fotkách, cítili jsme se tam jako bychom byli zase doma. :)

In the mid-19th century, Paraguay was the most advanced industrial country in South America, until the disastrous Triple Alliance War against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay deprived it of 70 % (and 85 % of male) population. Paraguay never fully recovered and gradually shifted into one of the poorest countries on the continent. The demonstration of this fact can be seen just in front of the national parliament.

We spent our last days in Paraguay's capital, Asunción (we're quite sure you didn't know its full name - Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción ;) ). Founded already in 1537, it's one of the oldest cities in South America. During the three days of our exploration we realized that it's mainly a city of huge social contrasts. Welcome to the first part of a mini-series dedicated to the splendors and miseries of Asunción.

Back to the journey. You might not know, but there is a small Czech community living in Paraguay, so we couldn't miss a chance to meet at least some of those people. Do they still speak Czech? How does their life looks like? Will they even talk to us? You will find out while checking the pictures! ^_^

Exactly two years ago we posted a nice Christmas story about how somebody we even didn't know personally gave us a mobile phone because he heard that we have been robbed. The mobile phone helped us in countless situations and Martin is actually still using it on his journey, but it is not the point of this post. :D
We want to share another beautiful story. As many of you probably know, last year we sent packages from Venezuela to Slovakia and Czech Republic. The first one got happily home after (only) few months, but mine (Jana's) package to Czech Republic got stuck up there with very uncertain future. My dear Venezuelan friends tried to help me to get it, but it was really complicated and despite I kept some hope, I must admit I was very pesimistic about the possibility I will ever see my little souvenirs and gifts collected during the first year in South America again. Well, at this point, considering I am writing this on a Christmas Eve, you can probably guess how the story ended. :D After more than one year, THE PACKAGE HAS ARRIVED and I, all moved and nostalgic, am just about to open it under the Christmas tree. :)
Dear friends and followers, we wish you a very merry Christmas and... don't ever lose hope. :)
