Excitement is brewing for opening night tonight!!!!

Here's what our incredible director Ricky Dey has to say:
Discovering this play has changed the fabric of my life and that of the students undertaking Apirana’s poetic and brutal text. Here at Te Auaha, we need to continue to stage our stories, about our people and be fearless in doing so. As an ensemble, we are so grateful to be able to share our Mahi with you, our most important whenua. Our whānau. Kia kotahi koutou! - Ricky Dey

We are so proud of all our cast and crew ❤️

Apirana Taylor’s Whaea Kairau: Mother Hundred Eater holds a mirror firmly to our faces – and we don’t dare look away.

This marks the end of two years of training at Te Auaha for the actors tackling Taylor’s work.

Whaea Kairau promises to be nothing short of a compelling performance.

Blood, family, greed.
Set in late 1840s New Zealand amid growing turbulence and racial tensions Te Auaha acting students perform Apirana Taylor’s saga Whaea Kairau: Mother Hundred Eater; the epic story of a dispossessed Irish woman whose livelihood is dependent on the slaughter of war.

Apirana Taylor adapted Berthold Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children in 1995 when it was first produced by Taki Rua Theatre. Brecht’s topic of a merchant family trailing European armies across a desolated landscape during the 30 Years War (1618-1648) translated well to the circumstances of the equally pointless and viciously devastating (and economically exploitative) Māori Wars of 1845 – 1872.

The play is muscular, carnivalesque and brutal. The strong language is particularly poetic requiring actors to traverse both English and Te Reo. Aotearoa also plays the perfect desolate backdrop to a family labouring to survive during a bloodthirsty time in NZ’s history.

This marks the end of two years training at Te Auaha for the actors tackling Taylor’s work. With a heady mix of music and mayhem, heart and brutality their hungry take on Whaea Kairau promises to be nothing short of compelling live performance.

‘Whaea Kairau is partly a mirror of our own country. Among other things it is about the evils of absolute greed and blindness to human suffering’ – Apirana Taylor.
