I’ve put off posting this for a while as I’ve been trying to make a plan about how to move forward.
Hoping you can all help with some ideas! So…as some of you know, a fair few of the treasures have been taken, damaged, purposefully destroyed or just disappeared. This is absolutely devastating for all the kids that have made such beautiful creations and those who have gone out to hunt hoping to find them. So what to do? Some have already been and collected replacement bits and bobs to make new ones, some have not been along yet. It’s open house tomorrow and next week to come and get replacement parts so just pop in to the shed and collect what you need to re make at home. When you rehide it, please put it somewhere really well hidden and submit a new form on the website. We have a couple that have been hidden in a jar which works well keeping them from getting condensation in them, so maybe consider that? If it keeps happening maybe we don’t hide the treasures, just the log book, art trading card and keep the treasures at home? All and any thoughts appreciated.

Hi all, due to circumstances out of my control, the event in Timaru at the Eco-Centre that was happening this weekend will be postponed for another month or so. I'm sorry to do this to those who were looking forward to coming along, I hope we will be up and running really soon with a new making-day and also with boxed making kits able to be posted to you all over the South Island.

For those that are new here, I wanted to let you know how this all came about! My name is Emma and I run a little venture called The Old Tin Shed in Waimate which primarily runs kids' art workshops. I had an idea for this project after as a family, we have tried Geocaching on multiple occasions but found it to be so disappointing. Treasures (or caches) are not simple to find, they are not made for their aesthetics and certainly not for the minds of kids. We recently went on a biking trip to find caches and gave up after two hours having found just a few and ended up with grumpy kids. So, this fun, creative, quest which combines some of my family's favourite pastimes including LEGO, art, maps, adventures, road trips, treasure hunting, and miniature things, was born.
Here are the basics - this venture is inspired by Geocaching, the global treasure hunt that you may have heard of. This is different because the Mini Art & LEGO Hunt is ALL about kids. In short, you make a treasure in a little dome using art and LEGO, you hide it, you log its location on the website then you go off around South Canterbury (just to start with) and find all the ones others have hidden! The treasures are all unique, personal, and beautiful and give kids great joy to find. It will get you out and about as a family, even on a rainy day, and hopefully put a smile on your kid's faces. Here is the website to check out:

It is now open for Timaru bookings and ALL the info is on there including an FAQs page. We made around 50 which are hidden around Waimate during the Winter Festival in July and you'll be able to see these on a map when you sign up. It's only $15 for the kits (which include a Minifigure, art-making materials, 2 x Art Trading Cards, a log book tube, making materials, and access to the treasure map website for a full year. It's been super fun so far and I am really excited to expand it further to you guys in Timaru on September 24th. Get in touch with any questions! Emma.

We hid one extra one today! It’s in St Andrew’s, which I know is a little bit out of the 20km zone, but we need to start going a bit further afield soon don’t we!? It’s a cool stop off on the way to Timaru. See if you can guess where it is. Check the map for the answer 😁😉

Happy weekend treasure hunters! We are almost there with all the treasures, just a few still to come in but there are plenty to hunt for this weekend. The weather is chilly, so rug up and get out there. Remember to bring a pen to write your name in the log book, bring your Art Trading Card to swap, explore around before you find your treasure, and return the treasure to where you found it.
