What a fun way to kick off Term 3! 🎨

Our young artists took on three colour-mixing challenges: match your own skin tone, mix enough to paint a whole A3 page, then add lots of texture! There were some hilarious colour experiments, some surprisingly perfect matches, and plenty of proud “I did it!” moments.

I loved seeing everyone dive in, have a go, and enjoy the challenge. What an awesome first class! 🌈🖌️

I couldn't be prouder of what our young artists created in this workshop!

Inspired by the vibrant artwork of Australian artist Pete Cromer, each child explored bold colour, playful shapes, layering and collage to design a bird that is completely their own.

Every piece is bursting with personality, creativity and imagination. I love how each artist interpreted the same inspiration in such a unique way!

These beautiful collages are a true celebration of creativity, and I hope you're as inspired by them as I am. Well done to all of our amazing young artists—you should be incredibly proud of what you've created! 💙🎨

Our young artists dived deep beneath the ocean to explore the amazing shapes, textures and features of real sea creatures before using their observations and imaginations to invent their own unique sea monsters.

This workshop wasn't about copying—it was about looking closely, collecting ideas from nature, and transforming them into something completely original. From giant eyes and swirling tentacles to spikes, scales and colourful patterns, every sea monster tells its own story.

Throughout the session, children experimented with drawing, watercolour, paint pens and pattern-making, discovering how artists use observation as a starting point before letting their imaginations take over.

Every artwork is wonderfully different, and that's exactly what makes them so special. We love seeing each child's personality shine through in their creative choices.

Our young artists embraced the joy of process art, experimenting with layers, colour, texture, and mark-making to create unique mixed media artworks. Throughout the workshop, the children used a variety of tools and techniques, including scraping, spraying, dripping, stamping, layering paint, and expressive mark-making.

Thank you to all our amazing young artists for being brave, creative, and willing to experiment. I loved watching your ideas grow with every layer!

Join DAB-ART-DO for an 8-week Portrait Adventure!

This term, young artists (ages 5–12) will dive into the colourful and expressive world of portraits, taking inspiration from the imaginative works of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

Starts Thursday, the 23rd of July. From 15:30 - 16:45 weekly. At Waikaia School Artroom. Cost: $200 for all 8 weeks.

I can't wait for our next Dab-Art-Do workshop! Our young artists will be diving deep beneath the waves to explore incredible sea creatures before creating their own imaginative ocean monsters. It's going to be a fun-filled session of drawing, painting and creative discovery—I can't wait to see what they create!
