Two lakes forever woven into the story of Tarawera.

This waiata also features Guide Tihi, representing the guides of the terraces who traversed these waters, hosting visitors from around the world to the healing waters of Te Tarata and Ōtūkapuarangi. Through their manaakitanga, the beauty and stories of Rotomahana were shared far beyond Aotearoa.

Tarawera. Ruawāhia. Wahanga. Our maunga.

We call to our maunga, acknowledging both the mountain that once was and the mountain that emerged on 10 June 1886.

Our maunga waiata and movement remembers the beauty, the loss, the resilience, and the enduring connection between our people and our maunga.

Though the landscape may be altered, its stories continue to live on. They remain in our whakapapa, our waiata, and in the generations who continue to carry them forward.

Our modern-day expression of the breathtaking Pink and White Terraces - a place of extraordinary beauty, known by many as the 8th Wonder of the World.

Today, 140 years after the eruption that forever changed our landscape and our people, our cast and crew gathered at Lake Tarawera.

It feels especially fitting that on this day, we open Te Whare Tapere - Tērā te Auahi.

This kaupapa has been carried with deep care, aroha and responsibility. We know these stories belong to our people, our whenua and our whakapapa.

As the curtain rises tonight, we do so with gratitude and humility. We hope we can honour this history, do these stories justice, and make our whānau proud.
