Earth Emotions Exhibition

Earth Emotions Exhibition Earth Emotions is a collaborative exhibition of photography hosted by the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum.

Earth Emotions is dedicated to sharing our experiences of the crises we've unleashed in Earth's climate, biodiversity, soils, atmosphere, freshwater, oceans and forests, and in our own health.

The Earth Emotions Exhibition features over 100 photographs by 47 photographers from all over Te Tauihu, the top of Aotearoa/New Zealand's South Island. Through these images, we share personal experiences of the crises in Earth's climate, biodiversity, soils, atmosphere, waters and forests. We're the first generations to feel the impact of these, and maybe the last who can do something about them. While that might feel overwhelming, it's our portal to a brighter future.

We're sharing the Insight Gallery with you today a collection of personal moments of clarity and understanding about the planetary crises.

Earth Emotions was inspired by .a.albrecht who wrote a book of the same name. Glenn realised that the English language lacks words to express emotions about our home, the Earth, and he offers us new words like , the pain we feel when places we love are harmed or destroyed.

We have an opportunity to exhibit the Earth Emotions Photography Exhibition in a new venue, but to make this happen, we need to borrow enough display panels to mount the images. If you can help, please get in touch.

It's been a fantastic three weeks exhibiting at the Refinery Artspace in Whakatū/Nelson, and before that at the Nelson Public Library.

Huge thanks to the .print .io and to the many individuals here Te Tauihu and elsewhere around the motu who made our exhibition possible in its different forms.

Special thanks to the trust for the wonderful mihi whakatau offered at our Refinery opening on 31 October, to .a.albrecht whose book inspired the exhibition, and to our 47 wonderful photographers.

We hope to take the Earth Emotions to venues around Te Tauihu. Please DM us if you're interested in hosting the exhibition.

We've had over 20,000 visits to our five virtual galleries (links in bio) on .io. Earth Emotions remains open for viewing online at The Exhibit and on the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum's YouTube channel (link in bio.

"The public response to climate warnings over the last five decades has been as faint as the light beam from Nelson’s lighthouse on the mountains across the bay. Meanwhile the challenges of climate change have grown ever larger and closer." --Peter Kemp

Visit the exhibition between 1-19 Nov at the Refinery ArtSpace, 114 Hardy St, Nelson.

Some photography exhibitions are the result of a contest. Others are the work of individual artists, or of a photography collective.
Earth Emotions is a bit different. Here's what's special about it.

Earth Emotion is local and inclusive, the creation of a wide variety of people living in Te Tauihu, the top of the south. In early 2022 the curators put out a call for photos, inviting anyone, with any kind of camera to use it to share their insights, emotions, actions, and future visions related to climate change, biodiversity, and the health of our soils, waters, and forests.

47 photographers of all ages answered the call, and thanks to funding from the Nelson City Council via the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, we were able to print and exhibit about 30 of the more than 100 images in the full exhibition.

Our hope is that the sheer size and the inclusivity of this exhibition can help replace gloom, doom and denial with a sense of purpose and commitment, and spur more people in our region to act personally, and to work for systems change.

A great vibe at this evening at the celebration and preview for photographers and their guests.

Following a wonderful karakia, co-curator Peter Kemp spoke about the origins of the exhibition and acknowledged the wonderful support the exhibition has received from people around Te Tauihu and beyond.

This quote accords with one of the main messages of the Earth Emotions Exhibition.

“If we are inclined to optimism, we might even understand that the world we can yet make is — even with the worsening of the planetary crisis — in many ways a brighter world than the one we have now: a world that both works better for more people and leaves the future a wider array of good options (the real measure of sustainability).”
