“Final Blooms - Hamilton Gardens”

In the background sits the memorial bench of Dr Sam McGredy IV beside the McGredy Rose Bed, while in the foreground the Hamilton Gardens roses—his final released variety—enter senescence. As their petals fade and fall, the plant reclaims nutrients, reminding us that endings can also sustain new life.

“Final Blooms” reflects both this natural cycle and McGredy’s enduring legacy. A world-renowned breeder, his influence lives on in the roses throughout Hamilton Gardens and in the many varieties he introduced over his lifetime.

“Blooming Legacy – Hamilton Gardens”

This work celebrates the final rose created by Dr Sam McGredy IV - the vibrant Hamilton Gardens hybrid tea. Known for his richly coloured “hand-painted” roses, McGredy introduced over 200 varieties during his career.

Here, the bloom is shown in full vitality, with subtle hints of Rogers Rose Garden in the background. “Blooming Legacy” honours the lasting beauty and influence of a breeder whose work continues to flourish.

To see the full artwork it is currently on display at Welcome Swallow Gallery in Hamilton East until 5th June

🎨New Work🎨

“Nā te Rangi te Mātauranga, nā te Whenua te Hauhake”
(From the sky comes knowledge, from the land comes harvest)

This painting reflects the deep relationship between celestial knowledge and cultivation in te ao Māori.

Guided by the maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar), planting and harvesting follow the rhythms of the moon and stars. Focusing on heritage kūmara in Te Parapara garden at Hamilton Gardens, the work acknowledges traditional storage (rua tahūhu) and growing methods and the role of ancestors of Ngāti Wairere, the original people of Kirikiriroa.

“Mātauranga Rangi, Hauhake Whenua” honours this continuum of knowledge - where sky, land, and people remain in relationship, and where sustenance is both physical and ancestral.

Currently on display at Welcome Swallow Gallery Hamilton East until 5th June

I Dreamt Frogs Were Coming Out of My Eyes

My first foray into lithography or in this case "litfrography" 😂
The prints I used to make it were not the best and not many of my attempts came out clear but I really like how they looked regardless so turned 2-3 of my "failures" into this exploding artwork :D

Also for sale with other exploding artwork books at the Hamilton Zine Fest Saturday 9th May at Hamilton Library.
