It’s the final weekend to catch the latest Claybenders exhibition at Orakei Bay Village, titled Inside Out. The show is full of fresh ceramic interpretations of the theme, and features the work of both established and emerging clay artists that are well worth checking out. There will be pieces by both sculptural and functional potters on display, and the exhibition can be found within ArtHaus Contemporary and open from 11am-3pm.

Held By The Moon

In this piece I bring the outside in.

I make what I see, taking photographs and using these visuals to create from clay. Then, they’re set stone like in the extreme heat of the kiln - the ongoing process mirroring life’s ebbs and flows.

“Placing myself within a piece of outer space, removing the walls and roof that normally obscure the connection to the night sky.
A simple rock, solitary and quiet, watching, comforting, calm and wise.

I see the moon and the moon sees me, blessings to the moon and blessings to me”.

“Insides Out”

Curious creatures break the boundaries of the self to explore the world. These oozing forms serve as a visual metaphor for personal growth; to truly explore, our rigid edges must soften and turn their insides out to merge with the world around us. By exposing some of what lies beneath their shells, these forms invite us to shed our own limits, expose our inner curiosity, and embrace the fluid joy of the unknown.

“Inside Out”

Inside Out prompted much contemplation and head scratching before deciding to take a more simplistic approach to the theme “Inside Out.” Quite simply it is a vase with protrusion facing inside and out. I was more focused on the design and aesthetics when making the work as my background is in design, so making a piece pleasing on the eye was important. The surface also inspires a bit of fun, mimicking bubbles from the childhood game of blowing bubbles.

‘Inner child’

My interpretation of the Inside Out theme explores the mask as both shield and revelation—what we choose to present outwardly, and what remains concealed beneath.

Together, these masks explore the tension between concealment and exposure, fragility and endurance, damage and healing. They ask what lies beneath the surfaces we present, and what might happen if we allowed our hidden interiors to be seen.

Dry By Arrangement

It seems that we are always trying to control water but never succeeding. Either we haven’t built enough dams and we run short of water in the summer or recently there is just too much water and we can’t drain it away quickly enough.
This piece plays with the idea, a vase with a hole and an ineffectual moat.

“Graphene”

This sculpture explores a future where regeneration and medical innovation collapse into biological catastrophe. Drawing on ideas of graphene-based repair systems, immune manipulation, and nano-scale intervention, the work imagines a body overtaken by the very technologies designed to preserve it. Organic forms swell, fuse, and mutate into unstable cellular architectures, suggesting regeneration without control — healing transformed into exploitation.

The theme Inside Out, brought to mind volcanoes and what they left behind in their wake. Broken jars filled with oozing substances of the unknown. Once a delight and now remnants.
