Since then I have held solo exbitions in town and around the country and regularly have my paintings on display at local galleries in Taranaki. I'm self taught and have always been a keen drawer, but shied away from painting for most of my life due to the fact that I'm colour blind. This all changed when I picked up a brush and some acrylic paints and started painting people. I painted in just bla
ck and white at first, then started adding a basic splash of colour to my paintings like red or blue. Armed with my new found painting skills my attention then turned to the landscapes around me, which was inevitable having grown up in the Taranaki Region with the mountain and the sea right next to me. For this I had to overcome my fear of colour, so I delved head first into trying to recreate all the wonderful colours that nature has to offer, which can be rather daunting when you don't even know what colours those are. But over the years, and through a lot of trial and error, I've become quite comfortable using colour, and have found a nice array of colours that seem to work best for me. My paintings are not intended to be an accurate or photo realistic depiction of a scene, more a representation of how I see the world, or in some cases, how I think the world should look.
