Cultural Contemporary Taonga Welcome to Cultural ContemporaryTaonga
Kia ora my name is Andrea Mangu. My process works in the following way:

1. Please read this part carefully.

Contact is made, we discuss what you’re looking for taonga (gifts) wise, designs, colours. I specialise in poi, rakau especially for our tamariki and korowai tailored specifically to people. After our discussion we make a time to meet.

2. Before the time we meet I conduct a Karakia - this gives me guidance through my process and the blessing of your taonga (what it is you are asking me to create

for you). Consultation (kanohi ki te kanohi) is face to face. We talk and go through the creative process where we discuss sizing, your design, patterns etc. This process is longer if we are talking about korowai and a personalised card is discussed to go with the korowai. Payment is discussed after our consultation.

3. Payment of half of the costs will be made to secure and source the materials needed to get started on your taonga. I also need to stipulate that there will also be a cost for sending the korowai directly to you.

4. The making of your taonga can take up to a month to complete. Once completed full costs for the taonga is made. Karakia is performed once again to cover the taonga as it travels safely to you.

5. Disclaimer: Due to the nature of my work and the uniqueness of korowai exchanges and refunds will not be provided. This is because each korowai is personal to you and your whanau and cannot be sold on to others.

The Mulligan Whanau Celebrational korowai is complete and wearing it is the mother, grandmother and great grandmother Pani Mulligan. The red taniko pattern and red feathers represent her lineage. The green taniko pattern and green feathers represent her late husband Sidney George Mulligan. This whanau plan on passing this taonga down to the generations to come within their whanau. Ngā mihi aroha e te whanau.

Personalized Korowai
Our Atua gave me a karakia over this cloak and showed me the colors and the design, paua. Not knowing her nickname from her mum only is paua. They didn't tell me anything, I asked the Lord to direct me, guide me and show me. This is His creativity with His blessings His outcomes. Praise the Lord.

Personalized korowai
When I held you in my hands, the most amazing colors shone through you and I the Lord knew, you were my hidden taonga. A dream of mine. The Lord showed me what this cloak should look like and, who it is gifted for. Through karakia and dreams He leads me and I follow. Each taonga is uniquely made for you.

The Mulligan Whanau Korowai
This is another example of a personalized celebration korowai before it is assembled together. The triangular motif is called niho taniwha (Dragon's teeth) that represents wisdom, strength and stability. The repetitive motif symbolizes the whanau's chieftain lineage which include stories, histories and myths passed down over time.
The colours green and red were chosen to reflect the parents whose children, grandchildren and generations to come, as it will be a reminder of their whakapapa, the pride and the mana of their whanau especially when they wear this korowai.

Personalised Korowai
This is an example of a personalised korowai in the beginning stages. The whanau used purple as the person who receives the korowai likes the colour. The colours red, yellow and green connect to Bob Marley a favourite artist of the receiver.
