MY BACKGROUND:
Ko Raukawa, ko Ngāti Tūwharetoa, ko Waikato-Tainui, ko Pare-Hauraki, ko Te Arawa ōku Iwi. I started my journey (whakapapa & succession) back in 1991 with my father and wish to share my experiences and knowledge with our people.

Have your say – Whenua Māori Rates Policy submission

Waikato District Council is currently seeking feedback on its Proposed Whenua Māori Rates and Remission Policy 2026. This policy will directly impact how our whenua Māori is rated, including remissions for papakāinga (housing), wāhi tapu, and whenua that cannot be easily used or accessed.

This is an important opportunity for us as uri (descendants/beneficiaries) to have our say and ensure our voices are heard.

I have attached a template submission to support you in putting forward your own whakaaro (views). You are welcome to use it as a guide when preparing your submission.

Consultation is now open on the Proposed Whenua Maaori Rates and Remission Policy 2026

Waikato District Council is seeking feedback on its proposed Whenua Maaori Rates and Remission Policy 2026.

The proposed policy is part of a wider review Council is undertaking that follows the Local Government (Rating of Whenua Māori) Amendment Act 2021. The law aims to reduce barriers to the use and development of whenua Maaori.

Previously, provisions for remissions and postponement for Maaori freehold land sat within Council’s wider Rates Remission and Postponement Policy. Bringing them into one standalone policy makes them easier to understand and access.

The draft policy proposes:

The land types considered as Maaori land in the policy
Remission for partially unused and inaccessible land
Remission to adjust inaccurate rating valuations
Remission while land is being developed
Recognition of non-commercial community benefit uses
A pathway to clear historic arrears after sustained on-time payment
A consistent approach for papakaainga on general title land
Consultation is open from Friday 10 April until 5pm Friday 8 May.
