“Brig J. F. Merry” of Damariscotta off Gibraltar, 1878
Oil on canvas
1878 a hundred years before I was born the father of my great grandfather was already a well respected and famous ship portrait artist in Livorno.
His father, Michele had been a painter as well.
My great grandfather immigrated to Campinas, Brasil as a surveyor for the railway company Mogiana in the coffee boom… he painted and drew as well.
In the late 80 I was already painting and Grandma ( vovó ) gave me his technical drawing book. I’ve copied and studied all the perspective and hatching . Later he was a technical drawing assistant at Polytechnic and went on one of the earlier projects to implement telegraphy posts in the far central north area of the country.
My grandfather who I’d did not have the honour to meet and play also painted watercolour. Learned with his father…
I’m actively researching about their work and life for years and all these secrets about the painters had been sunken when he crossed the Atlantic in a steamer….
I’ve crossed ( on a jet plane) to the pacific and now painting my ships and boats and the same sea that connects us.
Thank you 🙏 I see you and respect and praise who came before me!
