Reid+Wolken’s debut album ‘A Mirror Dim’ is nearly ready to be released.

Here are some words from us:
We’ve gone down the road of a stripped back slightly lo-fi approach, with a sense of space and expansiveness that's sometimes kind of reminiscent of alt-folk music or contemporary chamber music, in an indirect way.

These seven songs were written between 2020 and 2024, during some very strange times, and have been interpreted in many different ways, improvised on in different ways and in some cases further developed on a more structural level since their first outings.

The refinements you hear are a by-product of such experimentation, often in front of a live audience, and of adapting our live approach to the studio environment as best we can. No doubt these tunes will continue to evolve as we live within and alongside them, in time honoured jazz fashion.

Songs are recorded * more or less* live in the studio, with relatively sparing use of layering, one take or very few takes, and kind of raw at times.

We don't know where to place it in relation to NZ jazz, jazz in general; we feel it evinces a strongly jazz-rooted aesthetic, but we also think most of it's very different from what people are generally trying to do in a jazz vocal duo setting.

We work with some very unusual, sometimes dissonant harmonies and unresolved tensions, but at the same time we are not averse to writing the odd (and I mean odd) catchy hook (well, you can be the judge of that I suppose…).

Massive thanks to South Link Studios / Nick Roughan for engineering and mixing, Seaward Studios / Tom Bell who is currently putting the finishing touches on the mastering.
