UCanDance

The University of Canterbury Dance Club offers a social atmosphere to learn fun, partner dance. No experience is needed.

UCanDance is here to give students and non-students alike access to the world of dance in a fun and affordable manner. We strive to create a safe space where people can de-stress from Uni life and build connections with other like-minded people while getting groovy! Our classes are open to everyone (students, alumni and general public). Just $5 for student or $10 for non-students, which covers bot

h dance classes held that night. You don't even need to bring a dance partner. Music plays after classes till approx 9:30pm for you to practice your moves and socialise. Weekly Classes will be back at the start of Term 1 2025. We can't wait for another year of dancing though Uni life! Throughout the year we organise flashmobs, competitions, workshops, the UCanDance Ball, a Hanmer trip, and other social events. We also have close ties to Canterbury's other dance schools if you're looking to further your skills, specialise in particular dance styles, or learn a style we don't offer. With over 25 years of successful classes and events, we have several hundred members attending regularly, occasionally or just for our numerous parties. Come and join us and learn an awesome and very addictive skill that will never leave you short of a way to spend a night out. If you want to fix those two left feet, make friends and have fun, then we hope to see you at lessons!

It’s that time of year again… UCanDance is going on our annual Hanmer Springs trip!
Join us for a fun-filled weekend of dancing, relaxing, swimming, and good vibes!💃🕺

The trip will take place at the end of the third week of term 3, the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August.
You don’t have to be a member of the club to go on the trip, all you have to do is fill out the linked sign up form and pay the fee of $100. This fee covers accommodation, dinner and breakfast, your entry to the 70s themed Saturday dance party, and entry to the hot pools! We are limited to 40 places, so get in quick! Additionally, the sign up/payment deadline is the 26th of July, so make sure to lock in your place before then.

We will be carpooling there and back, so if you have a car and can drive, great, and if you can’t, you’ll be assigned a car and driver.🚗

Since it was such a big hit last time… we’re going to the dance o mat again!
This Sunday, at 7pm, meet us at the arts center to boogie the night away at the dance o mat! We will also be carpooling from the UCSA so meet us there at 6:15pm if you need or can provide a ride.🚗🚙
Come prepared with song/dance style requests, and we will be playing a bunch of line dances, salsa rueda music, waltz, hip hop, and maybe some styles from previous terms.
We may end up going on an ice cream run afterwards if people are keen!
We look forward to seeing you all there, it’s sure to be a great night!💃🕺🪩

It’s term 2 and UCanDance is back! 🪩

Here is our comprehensive weekday guide to our classes. Whether you are an experienced legend or a dance newbie, enthused(!) or somehow bribed here by your friend with food(…) come along to our beginner-friendly classes any week for socialising, music and dance!

Reminder, you don’t need to come to our partner styles (Rueda/waltz) with a partner! We encourage any curious, brave soul to jump into our classes whether or not you bring a friend 😊

Shake off the term 1 stress and ease into the break with a night of dancing!
📍Join UCanDance at the relocated dance-o-mat at the arts center March 29th at 7pm. 🕖

🚙For those who need a ride or can help take people, meet at the UCSA car park at 6:15pm to head off at 6:30pm, otherwise meet us at the dance-o-mat at 7pm.🚙

A chance to either practice the dances we’ve learned over the term, just have a boogie, or simply come to hang out!
After the dancing we may head into town for a sweet treat🍦

UCanDance is back for 2026! Come along to ti kouka TONIGHT for a short 1 hour line dance class, followed by an hour of music, dancing, and socializing! Because we’re not running for the full two hours/doing two styles, today is just a gold coin donation entry rather than the usual $5.
Come try out a few of our favourite line dances, and have a boogie and a chat!
Regular classes start next week!
