History, humility, and hope filled Parliament yesterday as MP Paulo Garcia took the floor to deliver his final valedictory speech in Wellington.

Reflecting on his path as Aotearoa's first Filipino MP, he shared powerful words on the sacrifices of public service and the blessing of calling New Zealand home. His message was a timely reminder to contribute with integrity and honour the opportunities we've been given.

Following MP Paulo Garcia’s historic valedictory speech at Parliament, we had the privilege of performing Paraiso.

MP Paulo is the first Filipino Member of Parliament in New Zealand - someone who has always advocated for Filipinos in NZ.

Sharing our music in that room felt deeply meaningful, especially as MP Paulo reminded us that service, culture, and community are legacies worth carrying forward.

We are honoured to have contributed to that spirit of reflection and unity …. a moment at Parliament where everyone have set aside their differences to honour MP Paulo Garcia as he retires — surrounded by colleagues, friends, community, and family.

Today in Wellington, under clear skies and a sense of calm, we witnessed MP Paulo Garcia deliver his valedictory speech — a moment filled with history, humility, and hope.

As the first Filipino Member of Parliament in New Zealand, MP Paulo reflected on his journey: the privilege of representing our community, the realities and sacrifices of political life, and the deep gratitude he carries for this country we now call home.

He reminded us that being migrants in Aotearoa is both a blessing and a responsibility — to appreciate the opportunities we’ve been given, to contribute with integrity, and to care for New Zealand as our shared home.

We sang “Paraiso,” a song of longing, hope, and the dream of a better world — a beautiful and fitting tribute to MP Paulo Garcia’s message and legacy.

It was truly moving to witness the entire Parliament rise to their feet, standing together in applause before giving MP Paulo their well wishes. An overwhelming moment of unity, gratitude, and pride for our Filipino community here in Aotearoa.

Over six decades, our communities have built lasting connections, helping cultural understanding and friendship flourish between our two nations. We are deeply honoured to mark this milestone alongside the Philippine Embassy in New Zealand, whose wonderful partnership and support made this musical celebration possible.

Two years ago, we came together as Filipino singers, united by our love for choral music. What began as a shared passion has grown into a beautiful community — with new voices, countless rehearsals, food trips, laughter, and friendships that feel like family. 🫶
