Black After Hours is proud to welcome Ahmen Mahal as the MC for the night.

With over 25 years in audio and entertainment, Ahmen wears a lot of hats: record label head, studio engineer, radio deejay, music producer and musician. On stage, he performs as Imon Starr, bringing energy as an emcee, entertainer, and multi-instrumentalist on bass and guitar.

Beyond the studio, he’s also an illustrator, graphic designer, independent researcher and junior data engineer; proof that creativity shows up in every corner of his work.

His songwriting credits include the 2026 Grammy-nominated ‘My Darling Dear’ (Best Traditional Blues Album) and “Inner Peace” off Shayan by Charu Suri (Best Contemporary Instrumental Album), featuring vocals from Siyer.

With a career this layered, Ahmen is set to bring the perfect blend of musicality and showmanship to guide you through the night.

Black After Hours welcomes Stela Dara Resende Albuquerque, a Brazillian-born freelancer trained in contemporary dance, with influences spanning street styles, hip-hop and improvisation, all grounded in her Brazillian roots.

Stela is a multidisciplinary artist who takes pride in covering a wide range of work; modelling, acting, dancing, directing, producing, company management and more. Through her choreography and movement, she aims to create safe spaces for collaboration and expression that reflect her multicultural identity.

She’s the founder of Andanca Company and creative director of the award-winning Show do Café, which toured in 2024 and 2025. Stela is also the recipient of the Fringe and Wellington Theatre Award for Most Promising Upcoming Artist.

Her journey includes starting as a volunteer at Kia Mau Festival in 2023 before premiering her co-directed work Gates to Memory alongside Ella Williams in 2025. Her performance credits span collaborations with Tawata Productions, Java Dance Theatre, Le Moana Dance Company, Tupua Tigafua, World of Wearable Art, Movement of the Human and more.

Black After Hours welcomes Hera Yemaya (Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Raukawa ki Matamata, Ngāti Hinerangi, Yurumein, Barbados), an emerging actor, writer, theatre maker and musician based in Wellington.

Hera moves across stage and screen with range and curiosity. She recently did sound design for The Immortal Jellyfish, a solo show nominated twice at the 2026 Fringe Awards, and in September, created and performed her own solo show for Tahi Festival’s HATCH showcase.

She’s passionate about collaboration, joy, and making work that’s intentional, honest, authentic - and a littly silly! Heading into her final year studying acting at Toi Whakaari in 2027, Hera is just getting started.

Come see her bring that energy to Black After Hours.

Black After Hours welcomes Taona Chataira to the stage; a saxophonist, composer, and producer based in Auckland, drawing from Jazz, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul and R&B.

His voice on the Alto Saxophone moves between raw improvisation and soulful control - equal parts smooth and relentless. His debut single, “Equanimity” introducers a world built on mood, feel and confidence.

More than a player, Taona is a genre-bender shaping his own sonic identity, drawing from the greats while carving a lane of his own.

Black After Hours is curated by Vira P**y, an award-winning first-generation Congolese-Kiwi advocate, storyteller and public engagement practitioner, raised in Tāmaki Makaurau and now based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She is also a BCA superSTAR and has been active with our community since 2020!

Working across advocacy, community engagement and creative arts, Vira brings a background in poetry and playwriting alongside extensive experience creating spaces for young people and marginalised communicates to participate, speak and be heard.

Vira’s longstanding connection with Black Creatives Aotearoa made their curation of Black After Hours a natural fit for BCA’s growing presence in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Rather than simply bringing an Auckland programme to Wellington, BCA wanted this night to be shaped by a creative voice with real relationships to the city and the communities we hope to grow alongside.

That vision is what’s bringing Black After Hours to life. What a privelege to have this incredibel young woman helming such a special event.

Our Sounds. Our Stories. Our Stage.

Black Creatives Aotearoa is calling Black creatives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and beyond to take the mic at Black After Hours. Join us for an evening of music, poetry, spoken word, storytelling and performance, held during the Wellington Jazz Festival.

Jazz bends rules, breaks form and improvises. We invite you to do the same.

Whatever jazz evokes for you, share a song, a poem, a monologue, a story, a performance; however you want to show up.

No audition. No CV. No need to be a jazz musician. Just bring something to share.
