It has been an immense privilege for us to be led by guest conductor Blake Scanlen this season. We are most looking forward to the concert in less than two weeks time!

Blake is a baritone, conductor, and teacher from Tāmaki Makaurau. He currently sings with Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir and St. Matthew’s Voices where he is Leader of the Voices.

He is Artistic Director of the Neotectonic Vocal Ensemble, and teaches Music and English at Westlake Boys High School.

Upcoming solo performances include Messiah, Handel’s The Triumph of Time and Truth (Handel Consort & Quire), and as guest artist with NZ Barok.

Later this year, Blake will be moving to the UK to pursue a Masters in Solo Voice Ensemble, singing at the University of York.

We sure are lucky to have so many incredible soloists join us this season! Our fourth and final soloist to introduce is Thomas Roeshol singing in Haydn’s Nelson Mass.

Thomas Roeshol is an Auckland-based baritone who performs regularly in both operatic and sacred repertoire. As an oratorio soloist he has appeared in works including George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St Matthew Passion, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, and Franz Schubert’s Mass in G major. He has performed as bass soloist in Messiah with the Bay of Islands Singers on multiple occasions and was a soloist in Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine with Bach Musica NZ at the Auckland Town Hall.

Thomas performs regularly with New Zealand Opera, appearing with the chorus and in featured roles across a number of productions.

Operatic roles performed on stage include Figaro and Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Schaunard in La Bohème, and Marullo in Rigoletto. He also performed the leading role of Rolv in the world premiere of the opera Kimenby Magnar Åm.

While based in Germany, Thomas appeared as a soloist with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker in their Mozart für Kinderconcert series performing Mozart arias.

He studied at University of Tromsø, the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, and the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. He has participated in masterclasses with Barbara Hendricks, Karan Armstrong, David Wakeham, David Jones, Thomas Moser, Monica Groop, and Janet Williams, and has also worked closely with Frances Wilson of Auckland Opera Studio.

Our next soloist to join us for Haydn’s Nelson Mass is Tenor Hamish Regan!

Hamish performs regularly across Auckland as a soloist and ensemble singer.

Recent engagements include appearances with Auckland Choral, Pakuranga Choral, Viva Voce, Handel Consort & Quire and Opera Factory.

A member of the New Zealand Opera Chorus since 2020, he has performed in numerous mainstage productions and Operas in Concert. In 2021, he also appeared with Sol3 Mio at Spark Arena as part of their Spark Sessions concert.

An alumnus of the New Zealand Youth Choir, Auckland Youth Choir and Auckland Chamber Choir, Hamish has been performing since childhood in community theatre and school musicals. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Classical Performance - Voice and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Commercial Law from the University of Auckland, graduating in 2023.

Most recently, he performed the role of Clopin in PTI’s production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, earning a NAPTA nomination for Best Supporting Male Role in a Musical.

Outside of performance, Hamish runs his own strategy and marketing consultancy, balancing his professional work alongside his musical career.

Hamish is excited to join Harbour Voices for the first time this year.

Introducing our second soloist for Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Hannah Morgan!

Hannah is a 22-year-old mezzo-soprano from Hamilton.
She began her vocal studies at the University of Waikato completing her Bachelor of Music in 2024 and recently completed her Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the University of Auckland under the tutelage of Dr Morag Atchison. She is currently studying towards a Master of Music at the University of Auckland, also under Dr Atchison’s tutelage.

Hannah is a young artist in the 2026 National Youth Opera Aotearoa programme where she recently played Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and will be playing the role of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro later this year.

She was a member of the 2025 Freemasons Foundation New Zealand Opera Chorus, performing in La Traviata and La Bohème. She was also the mezzo-soprano Soloist in the Auckland Youth Choir and Orchestra Collaboration Rio Grande performance in 2025 and a finalist in the Ronald Dellow Vocal Competition in 2025. She was named runner-up in the vocal category of the 2024 New Zealand Young Performer of the Year competition, following her nomination as the Norah Howell Recital Competition runner-up at the Hamilton Vocal Competitions.

We are so excited to welcome a stunning quartet of soloists joining us for our upcoming May concert - Haydn’s Nelson Mass.

Introducing our first soloist, 🎶✨

Alanah Jones is a soprano currently studying a Bachelor of Music Honours in Classical Voice at the University of Auckland under Dr Morag Atchison.

Outside of her studies, Alanah regularly performs as a soloist, and as a chorister in the Auckland Chamber Choir and St Matthew’s Voices.

In 2025, Alanah attended the NZ Opera School, and was named winner of the UoA Concerto Competition after performing solo with the Auckland Philharmonia.

Alanah is currently a Dame Malvina Major Young Artist in the inaugural National Youth Opera Aotearoa programme.

In 2026, Alanah looks forward to finishing her studies in Auckland before commencing a Master of Music at London’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Under the direction of Blake Scanlen, with Soomin Kim on organ, Harbour Voices is joined by an outstanding quartet of soloists:

Written in 1798 during a time of great political uncertainty in Europe, the Nelson Mass remains a thrilling testament to hope, faith, and resilience.

The programme will also include beautiful choral pieces by Henry Purcell, Joseph Haydn, and John Rutter.

Ever thought about joining a choir? Now’s your chance! 🎶

If you love to sing and want to take it to the next level in a friendly, fun environment, we would love to see you this Wednesday night.

We’re a community-focused, auditioned choir based in Takapuna and always welcome new voices to join us.

This term we are excited to welcome the wonderfully talented as our conductor.

Our repertoire is broad and varies from classic staples to modern favorites. Each year a highlight is singing with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra in the Last Night of the Proms.

Get your tickets for our upcoming concert “In Sweet Rejoicing” as we celebrate the Christmas season and also farewell our fantastic Musical Director, Jacob Moore, in his last performance with us.

Jacob has made an invaluable contribution to the choir this year and we are excited to send him off with our best concert ever!

The magic of John Rutter’s “Gloria” will be a treat for your ears as well as the delicious supper provided after the concert.

We are thrilled to have Soomin Kim join us on the organ for our upcoming Christmas concert, “In Sweet Rejoicing”.

Soomin is a highly regarded organist and pianist. She performs regularly at services at All Saints Anglican Church Ponsonby and Pitt St Methodist Church and collaborates with various individual musicians and ensembles, including the Auckland Philharmonia.

Born in Korea, Soomin began learning the piano at the age of six and continued after moving to New Zealand at age 15. She obtained LTCL Piano Recital in Tauranga under the tutelage of Denise Hull, then went on to study at the University of Auckland under Stephen De Pledge. During her studies, Soomin was selected as a Haydn Staples Piano Scholar, which involved concerti and chamber music performances with Auckland Philarmonia and coaching from internationally renowned pianists.
