The Rato Machhindranath Jatra, also known as Bungadya Jatra, is one of the most significant cultural and religious festivals celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley, especially around Lagankhel. During this grand event, devotees pull the towering chariot of Bungadyo (Rato Machhindranath) through the streets, symbolizing a collective prayer for rain, good harvest, and prosperity. As the chariot reaches Lagankhel, it is ritually drawn around the sacred Maju Sima tree, believed to represent the mother of the deity, adding deep spiritual meaning to the procession.

A key highlight of the festival is the presence of the Kumari, the Living Goddess, who observes the chariot procession, marking an important ceremonial moment. The festival brings together people from diverse communities, reflecting unity, devotion, and centuries-old traditions. Through music, rituals, and collective participation, the Jatra continues to preserve Nepal’s rich cultural heritage while reinforcing hopes for harmony and abundance.
