🚨 Nobody warned me that Romanian palincă is not a drink… it’s a personality test 🥃💀

So there I was, sitting at the table with my Romanian father-in-law, Tati 😂🇷🇴

And I was the one pouring the shots.

Confidence was too high 😭🇳🇬

As a Nigerian man, I thought:
“How strong can it really be?”
My brother… that was my first mistake.

“Tati, noroc!” 🥃

First shot?
Fire 🔥
But still under control.

So naturally… I poured another one 😎

Meanwhile Tati was sitting there completely relaxed 😐
No blinking.
No coughing.
Nothing.

But my ancestors had already opened emergency meeting somewhere in Lagos 👴🏾👻

Second round and suddenly I became an international motivational speaker 🤦🏾‍♂️

I was explaining Nigerian politics, Premier League tactics ⚽, fuel prices ⛽, and somehow giving relationship advice to the same man whose daughter married me 😭

Tati just kept nodding slowly like this was completely normal 🧘🏻‍♂️🥃

Then I poured the third shot.

At that point the room started moving like a Nollywood dream sequence 🎬😵‍💫

I looked at Tati and said:
“You know something? Romanians and Nigerians… we are basically cousins” 😂🇷🇴🇳🇬

Tati laughed.
That deep father-in-law laugh that says:
“This one is finished… but I respect the effort.” 🤝🏾😂

Be honest now 😭👇

Romania has me questioning everything I thought I knew 😂🇷🇴

Because why is this place so NORMAL… and nice?

People are friendly.
The cities are clean.
I feel safe walking around.
And Romanians talk to you like you’ve been friends for 10 years 😭

I swear I made eye contact with one guy for 2 seconds and suddenly we were discussing life, food, politics, and his auntie in Cluj 😂

The biggest culture shock wasn’t Romania…

It was realizing how wrong the rest of us are about Romania. 🇷🇴

Ce face, România? 🇷🇴
Y’all have been underselling yourselves. 😁

“17th of May taught me that Norwegians are actually undercover extroverts. 🇳🇴😭

During the day it’s:
‘Aww the children’s parade 🥹’
‘So cute!’
‘More ice cream!’

Everybody looking wholesome and organized.

Then night comes…

And suddenly people who normally say only ‘hei’ for 7 years straight are dancing on tables, singing national songs with tears in their eyes, and calling you ‘my friend’ after meeting you once. 😂

As a Nigerian living in Norway, I’ve realized:
17th of May is for the kids until around 8PM.
After that?
It becomes Detty December: Nordic Edition. 🤝🇳🇴”😀

Good morning everyone. 🤗

Hope you have had your morning coffee? ☕️😁

If you are Norwegian, you already know this.
If you are new in Norway or planning to visit, read carefully 😂🇳🇴

Today is the 17th of May, Norway’s Constitution Day.

Now, as a Nigerian, the closest thing I can compare it to is Independence Day… but honestly, this one is different.

Because in Norway, this is not just about history or patriotism.
No.
This is the one day kids completely take over the country 😭

Imagine a whole nation waking up and collectively agreeing:

“Today, children can eat unlimited ice cream, wave flags aggressively, scream in public, drink soda before breakfast, and nobody is allowed to correct them.”

It’s basically a nationwide hall pass for children. 😀💵🇳🇴

And the funny part?
The adults fully support it.

People spend months preparing outfits. Trains are packed. Streets are packed. Everybody is smiling. Even reserved Norwegians suddenly become social for 24 hours 😂

Meanwhile the kids are out there running on pure sugar, hotdogs, and freedom.

As a Nigerian, I was confused at first.

You mean your national celebration is not military parade and serious speeches?
It’s children in tiny suits and dresses eating their body weight in ice cream? 🍦🍨🍧

And somehow… it works beautifully. 👌🏿♥️

Honestly, I think Christmas in Norway quietly knows it is number 2.😂

God 17.mai, alle sammen. 🇳🇴🥳🥳

Gratulerer med dagen, Norge.🇳🇴

After living in Norway for 13 years, I’ve realized that 17th of May is not just a national day… it is basically Norway’s Super Bowl, Fashion Week, family reunion, children’s festival, and marching band Olympics combined 🇳🇴😂

As a Nigerian, I grew up knowing Independence Day as something important but usually calm. Back home, you might watch the parade on TV, hear a presidential speech, maybe complain about traffic and fuel prices, then continue your day 😭🇳🇬

But Norway? Ah no. Norway takes patriotism VERY seriously.

People wake up at 7am willingly. Entire families dress like royalty. Children run the country for a day. Grown adults cry over marching bands. And somehow everybody is eating hot dogs, ice cream, and cake at the same time like it’s medically approved.

The first time I experienced 17th of May, I thought: “This must be a royal wedding.” But no, it was just Tuesday 😭

And after 13 years here, I completely understand it now. 17th of May is not only about history; it’s about community, belonging, tradition, and celebrating the country together. It’s one of the few days where everybody, Norwegians, immigrants, students, kids, grandparents, all feel part of the same giant celebration.🇳🇴

As a Nigerian living here, that’s what makes the day special to me too. Somewhere between the bunads, brass bands, endless flags, and dangerously high sugar intake… Norway starts feeling like home ❤️

Gratulerer med dagen, Norge

I moved from Nigeria to Norway thinking I had seen cultural shock already… then Romania entered the chat 😂🇳🇬🇳🇴🇷🇴

Listen… nobody warned me that Romanian parents serve food like they’re preparing you for winter hibernation 😭🍖🥔
I said “just a little” and this man looked at me like I had insulted his ancestors.

Meanwhile, my Nigerian side is happy because refusing food is illegal in our culture too 😂
So now I’m stuck between:
“Nigerian training: finish everything on the plate”
and
“Norwegian stomach capacity: please calm down” 💀

The funniest part? In Norway, people politely ask if you want more food once.
In Romania, they keep serving you until you start breathing differently 😂

But honestly… this meal? 10/10.
I might go back to Norway emotionally stronger… but physically 7kg heavier 😭

Norwegians, be honest, what’s the ONE food from another country that completely surprised you? 👀👇

Norwegians will spend 2 weeks in Italy eating fresh pasta, seafood, truffle pizza, and five-course dinners by the sea…

…only to land at the airport in Norway and immediately go:

“Now I need a proper grill pølse.” 🌭🇳🇴😂

There’s just something magical about airport pølse.

You’re tired.
Your suitcase wheel is fighting for its life.
Someone’s child is screaming in the background.
And there you are… standing at the grill kiosk like it’s the final boss of the journey.

And somehow…
THAT pølse tastes better than half the meals from the entire vacation. 😭

I’m convinced airport grill pølse is not food.
It’s a Norwegian reset button.

One bite and suddenly:
“Yep. I’m home.”

Ok! I am just kidding it’s not a Norwegian thing, it’s just my thing. 😀

If you told Nigerian me that I would one day schedule my entire Friday around TACOS… I would laugh in jollof rice 🍚😭

Because what do you mean grown adults in Norway are emotionally attached to minced meat, tortillas, and cucumber every single Friday?? 😂

Now look at me:

Friday afternoon:
“Should we stop by Extra?”
“Do we still have taco sauce?”
“Soft or hard shell?”
“Wait… where’s the shredded cheese?!” 😀

Meanwhile, back home Friday meant rice, pepper soup, suya, maybe small enjoyment outside 😭

But Norway said:
“No ❤️
You will eat tacos.
And you WILL like it.”

And somehow… they were right 🌮🇳🇴

Anyways! Enjoy your weekend.♥️🤘🏿

Yesterday, I participated in the most Norwegian activity possible: dugnad. 🇳🇴😂

I recently moved to a new neighbourhood, and honestly, it’s the nicest community I’ve lived in since coming to Norway.

The funniest part is everyone already seemed to know me before I knew them. And there are apparently only 5 names available in Norway because we have 2 Tonys and 2 Jarles on the same street. 😭

What really touched me was that nobody switched to English for me, even though they all speak it well. Everybody just spoke Norwegian like I already belonged there. That small thing made me feel more accepted than people realize.

And somehow, in the middle of picking leaves and moving random things from one place to another, it finally clicked for me: dugnad is not really about cleaning. It’s Norway’s way of turning neighbours into community. 👌🏿

People brought pancakes, tea, coffee, and sweets like we were fueling up for a marathon. 😂

Even one cat showed up and spent the whole time supervising us like the chairman of the dugnad committee. I swear that cat looked disappointed whenever somebody stopped working. 😭

My ancestors probably imagined me abroad doing something glamorous. Meanwhile I’m out here feeling emotional because strangers accepted me into broom culture.😂

But honestly, if i had brought jollof rice to that dugnad, would they have eaten it? Just wondering. 🇳🇬🤔🤔😀
