When people think of Operation Market Garden, they often think of the bridge at Arnhem. But the operation took place across a much larger area.
In September 1944, thousands of Allied troops advanced from Belgium towards Arnhem. Their advance followed a narrow supply route running through North Brabant and Gelderland. This route soon became known as Hellโs Highway.
Towns and villages such as Son, Sint-Oedenrode, Veghel and Schijndel played a crucial role. Along these roads, endless columns of tanks, lorries, jeeps and supplies moved northwards. At the same time, German forces repeatedly attempted to cut the route by attacking bridges, crossroads and other strategic locations.
The area where Camp Liberty takes place lies at the heart of this historic region. Many of the roads, bridges and locations that played a role during Market Garden still exist today. Some have become an ordinary part of the landscape, despite the dramatic events that unfolded there more than eighty years ago.
That is precisely why we organise Camp Liberty here.
Because history becomes more meaningful when you can experience it where it actually happened. When stories are connected to the landscape around you. And when vehicles, routes and historic locations come together to form a complete picture.
