going back to Maastricht academy of architecture for this lecture! Excited to go back where everything started! (Literally for my practice!)

"To appreciate architecture, you may even need to commit a murder.”

In a series titled ‘Advertising for Architecture’ (1976-1977), Bernard Tschumi playfully created juxtapositions of images and texts to redefine architecture. Then, architecture was not only about the creation of spaces, but also about the activities that take place within them, the movement of bodies, and the user’s experiences. A church can be used as a bookstore, or a gym, a factory as a museum, and a lecture hall as a gathering place for revolutionary students and activists to organize their protests. The users' performance will change and challenge the original purpose and even the identity of the built environments. I'm reflecting on how performance art can contribute to redefining space and architecture, by examining art history examples and my journey from architecture to performance art, pondering the potential architectural design holds beyond traditional thinking. How can architects transcend conventional design paradigms to redefine their role and impact spaces?

Stop by next week Wednesday 29th for the opening of this video installation me and
working on!

This work is part of my research "happening to one another" and is going to be on inside the windows of the facade of the Goethe Institute in Rotterdam.

Date: Wednesday, November 29th, 2023
Time: 18:30 - 21:00
Location: Westersingel 9, 3014 GM Rotterdam

This installation is the culmination of 8 performance sessions held in September and October 2023 centered around exploring the potentials of performance art in the process of creating resistance and liberation from oppression.

The work represents a glimpse into the collaborative journey and long process experienced during these sessions. The creation of this work was only possible by the invaluable contributions of fellow collaborators: Gab Branco, Daria Pugachova, Rebecca Levy, Clàudia Ferrando in the first round, and Peyman Fazeli, Julia Nielsen, Rojin Tavassoli, Hana Kozma, Vanessa Schaller, Kim Zieschang in the second sets of sessions. Additionally, Hosein Danesh and Qiyun Zheng brought their artistic research questions to the group. They led the sessions for one day, experimenting with a 'superimposed' method aimed at creating a cohabitation of multiple performative practices.

I hope to see you there and share this moment of celebration for our communal effort.

A corner of the swamp
At first it seems Monet has just painted his son and wife in his apartment while he was living in Argenteuil, near Paris. That's the official explanation of musee d'Orsay. But when I look at this painting, I see a room under water. I see that boy and the woman are drowned in a swamp, in the dark and blue colors, in a gloomy damned afternoon. Monet is looking at them from the outside, he can see the weeds and plants outisde the swamp, but he is not planning to save them, it is done, he is just remembering their death. Isn't this a nightmare? Water falls in from the window and then it gets darker and darker. I'm not creating anything, all is in it. Look at the floor, the reflection, that is water, no floor ever can create that shininess. And the table. It is like Camille is going inside it. And the ceiling! what is it over there? Let's just look at the blues. They can solve this enigma.

In her installation at the atrium of Gropius Bau, Chiharu Shiota, has used 780 km of white yarn! 780 km!! In the official catalogue of the exhibition one can read: "Integrated in the installation are references to historical documents that relate to the early history the exhibition house, such as floor plans, historical images and pages from historical guides to the collection." So the nets stretching through the space are to collect and gather the information about the history of the building. "For over a hundred years, knowledge has been presented, preserved and constantly rethought in this space." What I don't understand is the relation of the forms of spider looking nets and the explanations provided about the concept. Is it only acceptable because it has reached a certain amount of beauty in its random/accidental design? .

What can ugliness of concrete say about socio-political issues of Middle East?
"Marwan Rechmaoui's Pillars series from 2014 to 2018 is about decay and decomposition; materials from inside of the works are exposed to the outside, like a gutted animal. Rechmaoui is always trying to examine socio-political expressions of identity and community in the built environment through his sculptural forms and their materiality. As here these pillars can be equivalent of the foundations of ideologies and religions, they are the basis to build on. But this is about Middle East and right now those foundations are crumbling and cracking."*

This is not a beautiful post! Exactly! Santa Caterina market which is the first Barcelona's covered market (1848), have been through a renovation. The image that I always had from this building before going there, was the bird's eye view probably probably by the architects (second photo in this post). You can see how much effort the designers put into the form and the colors of the roof which cannot be fully appreciated by pedestrians and daily users of this market, as if this roof is designed for airplanes passengers, people who are living in the neighborhood looking out of their windows, or even birds! This is one of the simplest manners that architects sell their design and win the competitions by presenting flowery images and renders! This is not how a building is lived. Look at the fourth image when in a primitive way a bunch of columns are situated in front of a store entrance. Architecture of living vs architecture of seeing! .
