: Vatnasafn - Library of Water
"Vatnasafn - Library of Water" is a project by American artist Roni Horn, produced and realized by ARTANGEL. Located atop a hill overlooking the Breidafjordur fjord on the west coast of Iceland, the project - housed in the former library of Stykkisholmur - displays 24 large samples of water collected from 24 Icelandic glaciers. Tall transparent glass columns resembling giant vials are filled with water, ranging in color from crystal clear to murky and opaque. This peculiar museum also collects English and Icelandic words used to describe the weather, which have been inscribed on the library's floor. Since the project's inauguration in 2007, one of the 24 Icelandic glaciers has disappeared, conferring a ominous role to this museum that seems to be devoted to the preservation of both geological time and fleeting ephemerality.

: Museo Frida Kahlo
The Frida Kahlo Museum is hosted in the house where the legendary Mexican artist was born, lived with her husband Diego Rivera, and died. Works by Kahlo and Rivera are displayed along pieces by friends and international artists and their pre-Colombian and folk art collection. Personal mementos and relics - such as Kahlo's hand painted corset - complete the display which will win over even the visitors most skeptical about the cult of personality that surrounds the Mexican artist. Among the highlights, the section of the house where Leon Trotsky lived at the time of his collaboration with Andre Breton and where he escaped an assassination attempt by Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueros. Well worth a visit is also the phantasmagoric pre-Colombian museum Anahuacalli conceived by Rivera and the two modernist studios where Kahlo and Rivera worked, separated by a sky-bridge.

: Museo Xul Solar
According to Jorge Luis Borges, Xul Solar was the only person who could be perfectly at ease anywhere in the universe. Artist, mystic, philosopher, Xul Solar (1887 - 1963) invented at least two imaginary languages and a few possible worlds. A small museum in Buenos Aires - a modernist fantasy with a MC Escher feel to it - preserves hundreds of his paintings, his library, and his prepared piano that was meant to play both music and colors.

: The New York Earth Room
Walter De Maria's "The New York Earth Room" is one of NY's best kept secrets and one of its most magical art experiences. Created in 1977 as part of the visionary programs of the Dia Art Foundation - which supervises a constellation of 11 art venues and museums, including legendary works such as Robert Smithson's "The Spiral Jetty", Nancy Holt's "Sun Tunnels", De Maria's "The Broken Kilometer", and the sprawling temple to Minimalism at Dia Beacon - "The NY Earth Room" consists of a large second floor apartment filled with 197 cubic meters of soil weighing over 127.000 kilos - a martian landscape mysteriously landed in the heart of Soho. The sense of stillness and the smell of earth will stay with you forever.

: Kolumba Kunstmuseum
Kolumba is the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the building is simultaneously austere and sensual, harmoniously merging the Gothic ruins of St Kolumba, Gottfried Böhm's chapel "Madonna in the Ruins" (1950), and a unique archaeological excavation site (1973-76). Kolumba allows visitors to experience two millennia of western culture in a single building. Comprising art from late antiquity to the very present, the whole ensemble is imbued with a reverberating sense of history, strikingly intensified through its distinctive architecture. Rotating presentations combine objects and artworks as diverse as medieval reliquaries and Jannis Kounellis's "Tragedia Civile" (1975). Current displays focus on the work of Roni Horn, on ancient objects from and about Jerusalem, and a socially engaged project by Eric Baudelaire, inspired by the work of Daniel Buren, which expands the museum beyond its walls, engaging with children in Cologne schools.

: Benesse Art Site
“Benesse Art Site” refers to a series of museums and artistic interventions scattered on the islands of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima in Japan. Bringing together new architectural projects by the likes of Tadao Ando and Ryūe Nishizawa with artworks staged in reconverted traditional houses and other ‘found spaces’, the “Benesse Art Site” creates an archipelago - both literal and metaphorical - of site-specific artworks by Christian Boltanski, Walter De Maria, Shinro Ohtake, Yayoi Kusama, Claude Monet, Bruce Nauman, Hiroshi Sugimoto, James Turrell, Lee Ufan, and many others, disseminated amidst the spectacular landscapes and vistas of the Seto Inland Sea region.

: Kröller-Müller Museum
Its location in the heart of a national park in the Veluwe region in the Neatherlands makes the Kröller-Müller Museum a unique place to discover the second largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh in the world. Displayed in a series of exceptional buildings designed by architects such as Henry van de Velde and Wim Quist, Gerrit Rietveld, and Aldo van Eyck, the collection also features masterpieces by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondrian, among many others. In the sculpture garden, visitors stroll past works by Jean Dubuffet, Lucio Fontana, Barbara Hepworth, Aristide Maillol, Claes Oldenburg, Auguste Rodin, Marta Pan, and many others. At Kröller-Müller the integration between art, nature, and architecture defines the viewing experience in ways that continue to influence many contemporary museums.

: Museo Casa Mollino & Casa Studio Carol Rama

Carlo Mollino (1905 – 1973) and Carol Rama (1918 – 2015) – two of the greatest eccentrics of Italian art – were neighbors in Turin, living a few meters from each other. Now it is possible to visit their homes which have been turned into house museums. Rama’s home still preserves the souvenirs and mementos of her career, including photos with Andy Warhol, notes from Man Ray, poems by Edoardo Sanguineti, and the materials she used on her paintings, such as glass eyes and rubber tires. Mollino’s apartment reflects his interior design philosophy: for him interiors were like shells “formed over time in infinite layers that are the negative and petrified image of the animal living within – the practical expression of a feeling”.

: Glenstone Museum
Glenstone combines art, architecture, and nature in the serene landscape of Maryland. An exceptional group of contemporary and post-war masterpieces are staged in the pavilions designed by Thomas Phifer, which overlook a pond and are illuminated almost exclusively by natural light. Rotating presentations by Charles Ray and permanent pieces by Richard Serra, Michael Heizer, Cy Twombly, and Robert Gober anchor the displays, which attain a seamless integration of natural beauty and rigorous precision. The landscape - designed by PWP Landscape Architecture - features paths, trails, streams, meadows and forests which hosts outdoor sculptures and interventions by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jeff Koons, Ellsworth Kelly, Andy Goldworthy, and Tony Smith, among others.

: Masumiyet Müzesi | The Museum of Innocence

"The Museum of Innocence" is both a celebrated novel by Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk and a museum he has created in his native Istanbul, Turkey. At the Museum of Innocence, the novel and the museum are intertwined in multiple ways, with objects and relics belonging to the novel's characters displayed in an evocative total installation. As such, the museum acts as a kind of device to construct what critic Roland Barthes called "the reality effect" - that illusion of truth that is achieved through the apparently most insignificant details. "The Museum of Innocence" serves as a model for the type of "personal museum" that Pamuk has been advocating for since the publication of his "Modest Manifesto for Museums" in 2012. "The aim of present and future museums must not be to represent the state, but to re-create the world of single human beings," he writes. "It is imperative that museums become smaller, more individualistic, and cheaper. This is the only way that they will ever tell stories on a human scale. Big museums with their wide doors call upon us to forget our humanity and embrace the state and its human masses. (...) The measure of a museum's success should (...) be its capacity to reveal the humanity of individuals."

: Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art

The Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), located in Tamale, Ghana, is an artist-run project, which combines exhibition spaces, a research hub, and an artists’ residency. It is an initiative launched by Ghanaian artist, Ibrahim Mahama, whose work often engages with architecture and urbanism through processes of transformation and collective participation. More of a production facility and a think tank than simply a space for the display of artworks and objects, SCCA imagines new possibilities and new responsibilities for artists both in their local communities and internationally. Part of a network of institutions created by Mahama, such as Blaxtarlines and Red Clay - complete with decommissioned airplanes - SCCA operates in the tradition of visionary artist's museums and alternative institutions, which have recently found renewed energy in the African continent, as in Kehinde Wiley's Black Rock Senegal in Dakar, the African Artists' Foundation in Lagos, and Michael Armitage's Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute, among others.
