About me
The dustiest locations on earth are the locations that inspire me the most. Locations that are abandoned, given up and often isolated. Each with their own story, with their own uninhabited world, waiting to be captured and passed on. That's why I travel all over the world, under the name of Baksteen.
My own name is Levaronne Lourens and I am a photographer from The Netherlands. Historical and architectural remains are what I prefer to photograph. What is an old, dilapidated building for some, is the scene of a wild spectacle for me.
I want to capture these scenes and pass it on with love to ensure that no one misses its beauty. My website is the place where I have put all these pictures together.

When I set out to look for this long forgotten railroad, I wasn’t well prepared for such an adventurous hike. It took going through the deep green forest, from left to right because of the swampy underground, searching with my gps which only showed the treetops, asking other hikers which estimated another half hour while I was already tired from the long walk…but I was determined to see and photograph this place myself. 🕵🏽♂️
And finally in this hidden valley below the trees, there it was. The winding, broken down railroad looked like a track that formerly easily could have taken you to platform 9 ¾ or to the houses of the Hobbitses.

When the war ended, only 40 Jews returned home to re-establish the community. Because there is hardly a jewish community left in this city, this beautiful synagogue is abandoned

This former Institute , with a neo-romanesque architecture, looks like it has been at war. With damp walls and a decaying ceiling, lies in ruins. A grand building that whispers stories of the past, dressed in art, a building that still breathes life…

Power plants and glamour aren't two concepts you would normally put together in one sentence, but just look at this awesome control room. This power plant control room is a true time capsule of the glamour, elegance, and delicacy of Art Deco design! Perhaps far ahead of its time; so stunningly beautiful.

The remains of an old 16th-century castle in France, overgrown with plants and hidden in a forrest between ancient trees. There was not much left. However, the impressive tower which is a few dozen meters high shows that a lot of money was spent.

This abandoned palace is one of the most charming palaces I have been able to admire in the past year. When I saw it for the first time on the internet, I was deeply impressed and couldn't wait to see it with my own eyes. Unfortunately due to the corona crisis, my first trip was not a happy one. When the news reports offered some lean way to travel again, I immediately booked my trip again.

This beautiful synagogue has been abandoned for over 30 years.
It was built in the Neo-Moorish style and almost entirely made out of wood which - to me - is stunning! Moreover, everything is entirely decorated with artworks and carvings.
