Welcome to Contrast: a meeting place for Dutch and international students.
What does Contrast offer? • a monthly cafe on Friday night: https://www.facebook.com/groups/contrastleiden/ • a host family programme • an eat&meet programme • an opportunity to meet local people and make friends • an opportunity to practice your English and perhaps pick up a little Dutch • an Alpha Course: https://www.facebook.com/groups/142983129203824/ • a Bible study group • Be Present: one-day volunteer projects with other Dutch and international students to help locals in need • extra events, like the Christmas Carols in December • trips to interesting places Contrast is part of IFES ISM.
Missie: Our aim is to make international students feel at home in Leiden. Contrast is organized by Christian students from around Leiden who are passionate about meeting new people and organizing fun events – and who are proud of their city! You don’t have to be a Christian to come along; everyone is welcome. We are looking forward to meeting you!
The team from Contrast Leiden likes to welcome you to Leiden! We just had our second meeting and we hope to meet you on friday! Also, the view from the window was quite nice. :)
There won't be a Contrast Café tonight. We'll let you know when our last Contrast Café will be!
Tonight we went ice-skating. It was awesome! (:

Introducing our advisory board members: This is Annefleur.
Hello, my name is Annefleur Teeuwen, and I am part of the Contrast Advisory Board. I’m 21 years old and in my fourth year of the BA International Relations. I have lived in Leiden for over two and a half years now, and I still enjoy living in this city tremendously. I joined Contrast because it gave me the opportunity to discover the international community within Leiden and to connect with students from all over the globe. I hope you feel welcome here and that we will get to meet you in one of our Contrast Cafes! Cheers, Annefleur
Remember: the clock is going back tonight! So you got one extra hour of sleeping time.
Always wondered where this idea of 'Daylight saving time' came from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4m637iYhDE
Introducing our advisory board members: This is Janno.
Hi, I am Janno Sturm, 25 years old and I am a student at University of Applied Siences Leiden. At the moment, I'm doing an internship in The Hague.
I was born in the province of Zeeland, in the South-West of the Netherlands, but I have lived in Leiden for more than seven years now. During the time I've been living here, Leiden has been a real home for me and I hope our city will be that for you as well. And for that reason I've been involved in Contrast since 2014. I’d like every student to feel welcome in Leiden, to meet other students and to do nice things together. Whether you’d like to just have a chat, you’re lost in Leiden or you want to ask another question, I hope to see you.
Introducing our board members: This is Debora.
Hi there! My name is Debora, I am 21 years old and I just started my masters Forensic Family studies in Leiden (it's about childabuse and neglect). Before this master I studied Child and Family studies in Leiden too. I grew up in the southwest of the Netherlands, in Zeeland, that is where my parents still live. I've lived in Leiden now for almost 4 years and I love it!
I am in the Contrast Board because I love to meet new people from all over the world. I once visited Bangladesh for 1 month and last summer I lived in Greece for 2 months. I met a lot of people there from all over the world, from so many different countries and so many different cultures. I hope you will have a good time during your stay in our beautiful city Leiden and I hope to see you at Contrast Café!
We got a lovely invitation to join the "route of happiness", read all about it and join, maybe with some other friends? http://geluksroute.nu/editie/leiden/english/
Share your happiness Happiness is literally found everywhere in Leiden, during the Geluksroute – Happiness Route, on the 11th and 12th of November 2017. What is the Geluksroute exactly? Giving and caring residents of Leiden make the Geluksroute possible. They share their happiness in the form of var...
Introducing our board members: This is Marianne
Hi, I'm Marianne, 24 years old and live in Leiden already for 5 years, still love this city! I graduated in child development and primary school teaching, and I'm a teacher now. Beside teaching I really enjoy to cook (and eat :)), sing, walk, run and be outside, especially with this wonderful autumn weather. Also, I really enjoy meeting new people, so hope to meet you at Contrast soon.

Introducing our board members: This is Liesbeth.
My name is Liesbeth and I am 22 years old. I'm Belgian, but born in Ivory Coast, raised in Burkina Faso and I have studied a while in New York. Just about three years ago, I moved to the Netherlands. Out of all these places, Leiden definitely has proven herself to be a worthy candidate. I love living here! I now study music education at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. I love singing and playing the violin. One of my dreams is to become an excellent music teacher. What's yours? See you at Contrast Cafe!
Introducing our board members: This is Anita.
Hi! I’m Anita, 21 years old and in the third year of BA Middle Eastern Studies. In the past two years, I’ve learned much about the culture, history, and politics of the Middle East, and I specialized myself in Israel, so I learned Hebrew. My Hebrew is on a reasonable level now, and this year I will start to learn Arabic. I’ve also studied in Jerusalem for half a year, so I know how it feels to be a stranger in a strange country ;) We’re hoping to meet you at the Contrast Welcome Event and hear about your experiences! Regards, Anita
Hope to see you all at our stand tomorrow at the OWL :)

We had a wonderful bikeride last Saturday!
Today is Liberation Day.
Liberation Day marks the celebration of freedom and the end of the Second World War for the Netherlands. There are various festivals and celebrations on Liberation Day each year, but it is an official day off only once every 5 years. Events include the Liberation Festival (Bevrijdingsfestival) in Amsterdam, which showcases the talents of Dutch and international musicians.
Today is remembrance day in the Netherlands.
Remembrance gatherings are held throughout the Netherlands. Every year, people dedicate two minutes of silence at 8pm (local time) on May 4th to pay their respects to soldiers and civilians who died during World War II, as well as other military conflicts and peace-keeping missions. Wreaths are laid at various places, such as the National War Memorial in Amsterdam.

You guys are amazing! :)

You guys are the bees knees! We had a lot of fun with sayings from all around the world. Remember: Don't wear a green hat, for how smart the squirl jumps, in the end it wil fall down and then the monky will come out of the sleeve and you'll fall in the streets. :)
Did you already sign-up for the event tomorrow? Don't forget to invite you friends too. Hope to see you all at the Contrast cafe!
We had fun playing some games at board game cafe De Gravin!

We're expecting Sinterklaas very soon at Contrast Café! Maybe he'll bring some chocolate letters. Have you been good this year?
Why do Dutch people go crazy for chocolate letters around this time of the year? Let's shed some light on this peculiar Dutch tradition!
White paint everywhere but we did it! Thanks guys!
We had a good time doing a BePresent project! :)
Een groep Internationale studenten is vandaag samen met Nederlandse studenten via Contrast Leiden aan de slag bij Present! Ze schilderen en halen behang af bij een alleenstaande vrouw met lichamelijke problemen. Ze is heel blij met hun hulp "I appreciate your help a lot!" Thank you, guys, for giving your time for someone who needs it!
