"Given the right circumstances - being different is a superpower." - Greta Thunberg

What's your superpower? What circumstances do you need to help your superpower thrive?

When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you’re winning!
I have Asperger’s syndrome and that means I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm. And - given the right circumstances - being different is a superpower.

I'm not public about my diagnosis to "hide" behind it, but because I know many ignorant people still see it as an "illness", or something negative. And believe me, my diagnosis has limited me before.
Before I started school striking I had no energy, no friends and I didn’t speak to anyone. I just sat alone at home, with an eating disorder.
All of that is gone now, since I have found a meaning, in a world that sometimes seems meaningless to so many people.

Toni Morrison didn't write a lot of poetry. I don't read as much poetry as I could. This is one of my favourites of hers. Two weeks have passed since her passing.

Eve Remembering

1

I tore from a limb fruit that had lost its green.
My hands were warmed by the heat of an apple
Fire red and humming.
I bit sweet power to the core.
How can I say what it was like?
The taste! The taste undid my eyes
And led me far from the gardens planted for a child
To wildernesses deeper than any master’s call.

2

Now these cool hands guide what they once caressed;
Lips forget what they have kissed.
My eyes now pool their light
Better the summit to see.

3

I would do it all over again:
Be the harbor and set the sail,
Loose the breeze and harness the gale,
Cherish the harvest of what I have been.
Better the summit to scale.
Better the summit to be.

Power play: reclaiming the story of Canada's missing and murdered

If you are lucky enough to be at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, SEE TARA BEAGAN's DEER WOMAN at CanadaHub.

Plays like this is why theatre matters.

“Canada has a real problem. We have thousands and thousands of missing and murdered women and girls, and they’re all Native,” says Blood.

“Is it possible to not be angry? No. But it is possible to work from a place that is not anger. Either I do this [play] and do my best getting this message out to people without getting arrested, or I become some kind of wicked vigilante and take matters into my own hands.”

On a distressing side note, as yet no Canadian dates?!

Lyn Gardner: We should define success by the well-being of theatremakers

"This was brought home to me at The Art of Self Care by the experiences of one participant who spoke eloquently and sorrowfully about their experiences and that of other people on a particular project that had caused burnout because of the lack of care extended to those making the project happen.

Ironically, at another conference recently, I had heard a great deal about the success of that same project and its rave reviews. What that tells us is that it is perfectly possible for a project to find public-facing success while bringing those behind the scenes to their knees. If that’s the case, then its time to think about what we mean by success".

Care is a very interesting word here. Yes it's about getting paid on time and working conditions. I think it is also care for the work itself, care for the art, care for the craft, care for the hearts making it, care for the world it is made in.

Thanks for posting, Allyson McMackon

The health and well-being of all involved should be as much part of the evaluation of any project as the quality of the art and quality of the engagement

My latest moves around Leiden :)

I'm substituting a the Thursday night Yin class at Liv Yoga for the month of July. Join me!

Proudly introducing our new Yin Yoga teacher Lopa! She will take over all of the Thursday Yin classes in July when Robinson is on holiday :-)

Lopa is an actor and voice and speech coach from Vancouver, Canada and she’s been a yogi for almost 20 years now. She moved to Leiden two years ago to live with her partner and their very old, very wise kitty cat.

For Lopa, the journey with yoga has been a gradual movement from the liveliness of Ashtanga to the spirit of Hatha (teacher certified in 2008) to the profound wisdom of Yin (teacher certified in 2014). She believes that a yin practice is very much needed in our fast-paced world: to bring ourselves to the present moment; to witness how our minds move; and to engage with our innate ability to sooth and transform our worldview through the body and breath. Lopa’s goal as a Yin teacher is the same goal that she has in her work as a spoken voice coach: to help facilitate a person’s full expression of her life as a human being.

High school production of Alien bursts into a viral success

Further to yesterday's post. Ingenuity. Resourcefulness. Problem-solving. All a result of creativity and inspiration. All hail to North Bergen High School teachers and students. All hail the power of the arts.

The sets and effects of the play are even more herculean considering North Bergen high school is one of the most underfunded schools in the entire state of New Jersey. The teachers pointed out their work in the arts does not get as much attention as the sports, but this play has the community (and the world) looking at them in a different light. “One student walked across the stage … a student I’ve never met and he said, ‘Thank you for putting us on the map in a positive way,’” Defendini recalled.

But what the teachers hope their students take away from the experience isn’t the viral fame, but the ingenuity it took to get there. “We really try to teach the kids to be resourceful and to problem-solve. I think the best thing for us was that we showed the kids, and the kids kind of pieced it together themselves, that you can really make something out of nothing,” said Defendini. “You can literally make anything you want, as long as you think outside of the box.”

'Arts teaching could become more important than maths in tech-based future' – education expert

Theatre teaches you every "soft" skill you need to survive our tech-based present and future. Happy day after World Theatre Day everyone!

“We talk about ‘soft skills’ often as social and emotional skills, and hard skills as about science and maths, but it might be the opposite,” he said, suggesting that science and maths may become ‘softer’ in future when the need for them decreases due to technology, and the ‘hard skills’ will be “your curiosity, your leadership, your persistence and your resilience”.

Why I do theater

As many of you know, I adore Patsy Rodenburg. She is a master of voice and acting coaching. She is champion of the value of truth, the importance of Presence, and each of our inalienable Rights to Speak. If you've been coached by me, then you know that her work runs through all that I do.

Every now and again I look up this TED talk Patsy about why she does theatre and why theatre -- and actors -- are so important. Even more so in these deeply disturbing and tumultuous times. I recognize her perspective and her story makes my heart soar.

I think your heart will swell too.

Happy Monday, all!

Patsy Rodenburg says the world needs actors more than ever. In this talk at Michael Howard Studios, she tells the story of a profound encounter that reveals the deeper role theater can play in people's lives.

The Shaming of Geoffrey Owens and the Inability to See Actors as Laborers, Too

"By undervaluing the labor of creative professions, we put artists in a double bind: their artistic work isn’t seen as work, but it’s also assumed to be so lucrative that any non-acting job they might pursue is suspect. Geoffrey Owens and Cynthia Nixon both became famous after starring on beloved sitcoms, which means that their work had value for millions of people. And yet we can’t help making presumptions about their bank accounts, as if acting is less a career than a ticket to dreamland. Perhaps it’s time to stop differentiating what kind of work we think is “real”—whether it’s acting, bagging groceries, writing (hi!), governing a state, or tilling the fields—and start valuing hard work in whatever form it comes." - Michael Schulman

Couldn't have said it better myself. Though I've been saying less eloquent versions for as far back as I can remember.

By undervaluing the labor of creative professions, we put artists in a double bind: their artistic work isn’t seen as work, but it’s also assumed to be so lucrative that any non-acting job they might pursue is suspect.
