How about you? What do you think you would be in war?
l'm a schoolteacher.
l teach English composition in this little town called Addley, Pennsylvania.
Back home, when l'd tell people what l do for a living, they'd think, ''Well, that figures.''
But over here, it's a... a big... a big mystery.
Sometimes l wonder if l've changed so much, my wife will even recognize me whenever l get back to her. And how l'll ever be able to... to tell her about days like today.
This, hopefully well known, line from Saving Private Ryan as spoken by Tom Hank’s character Cpt.Miller is something that has stuck with me since the movie first released. The destruction wrought by war, especially world war 2 has had me wondering if and how I would manage to get through such a thing and if I would be recognizable afterwards. The scene explains how everybody would be wondering who they are, where they should go or what they could do to get out of all that misery. Some might say that life itself is like this and that ‘nobody gets out alive” But at least in war you have choices to make, choices on how to be brutal or merciful or kind or just a survivor. I don’t think I would be much of a hero but perhaps I would be able to “not be cruel”. With our planned movie “Betuwe44” I hope to explore how anyone could act in war and what somebody might look to for guidance, both inside and outside himself.
So how about you? What do you think you would be in war?
